Nothing impressive or terrible. I went in around 11am on a weekday when they were very slow. Ordered a tuna poke bowl and taro boba. Prices were nice, and staff was friendly enough. I was impressed at how large the portion was for the bowl, though I had to wait a little while. I was a bit confused as to the wait since they were only making one bowl and drink and no one else was coming in, but I'm patient so I didn't mind much.
The taro tea was definitely a taro drink mix in water, which is usually something you roll the dice on when ordering boba teas in small US towns. That wasn't very disappointing, but the boba pearls were very overcooked and had a mild syrup on them (or it was just residue from the boba being overcooked- I'm not sure). I drank the beverage and left the pearls.
My bowl was a bit deceptive. Despite being very large, there was a disproportionately large amount of rice in comparison to the toppings. I know that for a low price, you can't expect too much of the good, expensive stuff, but I really wish they would just go a size down in whatever poke bowl containers they order so the ratio of rice to toppings is more 1:1 or 4:3 and less 2:1.
In terms of the actual quality of the bowl, I was certainly disappointed. I am a huge fan of poke, sushi, etc so I know that the flavor profiles of these foods are more subtle and clean compared to the bolder oily or spicy flavors of other East Asian countries or western countries (yes I know poke is Hawaiian, but clearly this is a Japanese-inspired restaurant), but this was still bland by the standard of even local poke restaurants. I'm not going to sit here and ignore the elephant in the room of Tennessee being a land-locked state with inevitably poorer quality of sashimi-grade seafood, but I have enjoyed relatively high-quality poke and sushi in this state, so I'm not letting this place off with that excuse. The tuna was slightly sour and quite fibrous and tough, and there wasn't enough sauce for the large bowl to be adequately flavored. The veggies, fresh and pickled, as well as the crispy add-ins were nice, but thats quite difficult to mess up. Every bite after mixing the bowl was a bleak experience of nearly flavorless textures. I got about 1/3 of the way into the bowl before I called it quits and tossed it (at that point it was mostly rice, anyway).
I'm quite sad that the meal was a dud. I was glad to have a poke place in driving distance, and since International Tea and Coffee Company went out of business, I was excited to have a local boba place again. I just cannot justify spending my money here again. For good asian-fusion, I highly recommend Teriyaki Madness a few doors down. If you want good poke without braving the Nashville traffic, Pokemoto in Gallatin is certainly worth the drive. I sincerely hope this place finds its feet and delivers the...
Read moreI never leave reviews but I was so impressed with how bad this place was as far as poke and staff goes. The salmon was completely inedible and turned me off on eating anything else. We each got a poke bowl with either salmon or tuna, totaling 3 bowls in all. None of them were edible. The salmon had some grayish white stuff on the sides, which I wrote off as maybe some poor filleting skills and thought it might be some fat which would have been fine. I took a bite knowing what salmon fat tastes like and was disgusted as it was not fat from the fish but some gross other thing. It was weirdly tough and gross. So the food was awful and I would not give this place another chance if it was free. Then, the staff at the front were incredibly rude. I went in when it wasnât busy at all and the two girls at the front couldnât be more bothered to have to take orders. I came in and greeted them and they just stood there. They also took forever. We came in when there was no one else ordering. Poke is practically already made. Itâs just an assembly line of raw fish and toppings. We waited for 20 minutes as the girls talked and took their sweet time, talking about customers and rolling their eyes as we are in ear shot. There were door dash orders coming in and they would bag them up and ignore me when I would ask which orders were which. Just looked at me like I was dumb. I had ordered two bowls and my friend with me ordered hers separately. When hers was finished they bagged it up with no receipt and just put it there and we had to ask if it was ours to which there were just blank stares and no answer. Then when my two bowls were done, they just put them on the counter with no bag and no receipt and more blank stares as door dashers are coming in and out to retrieve orders. I donât understand why you would bag one bowl and then not bag two bowls? No offer for a bag, chopsticks, cutlery, napkins, etc. even though itâs all behind the counter so customers canât grab it themselves. Iâve worked in food service and customer service and i understand what itâs like but all I did was come in and order food and got treated like I just committed a crime against them personally. Incredibly rude staff, gross/inedible fish, and should probably get a health...
Read moreI have eaten here a couple of times (once in restaurant and once DoorDash), the staff is super friendly and courteous, the first time my family ate here the kids had the dumpling ramen and they loved it, my sister and her husband had the tonkatsu ramen which was delicious and I had a build your own poke bowl, all of the ingredients were super fresh and the portion sizes were huge for only 15 each! All in all my family was extremely satisfied for the first time we tried! Because we had such a wonderful first experience I ordered through DoorDash for lunch a weekish later (chicken skewers, meat buns and a strawberry fruit tea) and omg! The skewers were exactly like my grandmother made when I was growing up and the meat buns had a great texture! The fruit tea was everything I wanted too! I know that we will all keep coming back and will recommend...
