The menu has a lot of well crafted dishes, lots of meat and seafood options.
I wanted something simple. Tostones, yellow rice, beans, and bean soup.
Perfect!!
Update:
I whipped this out while sitting at the table, so I neglected to go into detail. One very important thing I forgot to mention was the staff. From the person that greeted me at the door, to the person who walked me to my table, to the person who cleaned my table - ALL happy, smiling, and extremely polite. Notice I hadn't mentioned the waiter yet? He was awesome. Went above and beyond to make sure I was taken care of. He was attentive without hovering, friendly, and gave me the impression that he was personally vested in ensuring I had a satisfying and pleasant dining experience and worked with me to get me exactly what I asked for. I wasn't that hungry and was just looking for a lite dinner before heading back to the hotel (yes, I'm on travel).
I was motivated to update this review because I noticed an angry review from just last week and was really surprised as this was nowhere near my dining experience here. I can't comment on this diner's dish or their culinary expectations, I can only share what I experienced on a very busy and crowded Saturday night.
I have been blessed to have traveled extensively, both nationally as well as internationally through military service and post military employment, and of course, privately, and was deeply immersed in the Hispanic culture through marriage. I feel fairly confident that I can tell the difference and can appreciate the difference between different Hispanic culinary nuances, from Puerto Rican, Cuban, Mexican, Spanish, Peruvian, Argentinian, Brazilian, Columbian, and more.
In my experience, you can always tell the quality of food at a restaurant, whether four star, Michelin rated, or local family owned with mis-match silverware and a wooden front door leading to a dirt road with chickens wandering in and out of the restaurant.
As mentioned above, I ordered some very simple staples, beans and rice, tostones, black bean soup. They were all delicious, seasoned just right, not "Americanized", I could taste the Sazon and sofrito spices, and the tostones were perfectly twice smashed and fried. It all tasted homemade and there is no doubt in my mind it was scratch made. The chef(s) here know how to make Latin food, so if you're looking for Tex-Mex, head over to Playa Azul, but if you're looking for a true Latin American dining experience, try Sabor. Great food, fresh ingredients, skillfully made, and excellent staff, even on a crowded and busy Saturday night.
In keeping with an honest review, for me, the inside seating was a little loud because there were so many people, so I opted for the patio seating which was pleasantly quiet with gentle music playing from speakers above, and even though it was street level seating, the noise was minimal except for the occasional muscle car trying to make an impression by revving their engine to impress the strip with their supped-up prowess.
Eat here - you won't be...
Read moreA couple weeks back some friends and I had dinner at this restaurant and I’m honestly traumatized! I’m not going to make this post too lengthy lol but get straight to the point. My friend was served someone else’s order. He informed the waitress and because the chicken was correct and the sides were not she said she would go grab his correct sides and left the plate on the table. We all tried the quinoa and the veggie he was served. About 3 minutes later the waitress rushed to our table in panic and asked if we touched the plate that we were served a completely different order. We were in shock and kind of puzzled, so we took a moment to respond. Well before we could, she swopped the plate out for my friends correct order and took that plate back to the area were plates are picked up by the servers. I kid you not. Less than 15 sec later the other waitress came and grabbed that exact plate and took it to the table directly next to us. It was the same PLATE that was served to my friend, sat at our table, and ate off of. We notified our waitress right away and she tried to say noooo it’s not the same plate. We insisted she go ask and check. She came back and said kinda jokingly. “Yes you are right, it’s is” we were like okaaaaay…. Are you going to get it off the young girls table before she starts eating???!?? Nope! She didn’t. Then a big white guy wearing a hoody rolls up to our table to ask how everything was. When asking if he was the owner he said no he’s running the place right now, the owner is out of the country and he is the manager. Great, we explain in detail to this man what just happened. He acts like he is shocked. He goes in the corner by the bathroom, next to the bar and talks to both waitresses involved. We just knew at that point they were going to come grab this plate off this girls table!!! NOPE! And honestly at this Point the girl had ate more than 50% of her plate. The manager came back over to assure us this never happens and they are 4-5 Million dollar restaurant blah blah blah. What was the point of pointing that out, it was kind of embarrassing. But further more this man did nothing to advocate for his customer. We were not the victim here it was the poor girl that was enjoying her food that had no clue what her plate just went through. Disgusting, selfish, greedy, and prideful. Those are the words that come to mind. Please make a different choice before giving this business your money. They don’t care about your safety and clearly don’t really need your money. They are making 4-5 Million a year as the Manager stated randomly. Spend your hard earned money somewhere that will take your safety and their business more...
Read moreWe decided to try Sabor to see if they had that authentic cuisine and of course we were disappointed that it wasn't. We walked into the establishment and we just stood there and looked around since nobody would seat us, we saw that the employees were hanging out at the bar. So we were finally seated by the most unpleasant waitress, which was one that was at the bar eating and not attending to us. We order the Churrasco and the Cuban and both were pretty good, a bit over priced but they were OK. We then decided to order desert (which we rarely do) I ordered the Churos with caramel and chocolate dipping sauce, and let me tell you I seriously laughed!! These are the exact same ones I buy at SAMS club and they come in a 24 count box! The caramel sauce was seriously rotten, fermented something??!! I told the waitress and all she said was "yeah well that could possibly be since we make it ahead a day or so" (are you kidding me?!) She didn't even have the chefs in the back check it or replace it NOTHING! My husband ordered the Tres leches and it was far from authentic and the piece of cake was seriously swimming in about an inch of milk. So I'm done venting about this crappy place and I will be to never stray away from my favorite true AUTHENTIC restaurant USULUTECO 1714 E NORTHERN St. I wasted over 40$ on horrible service and on a wanna be Latin restaurant. I love USULUTECO and nobody in Wichita will EVER compare!
Oh and if you ask the waitress how something is she will down talk some of their dishes! If anyone watches those shows like Restaurant Stakeout you know...
