We were actually headed out to another spot on the drive, which turned out to not be open, so we strolled into Ethos - hoping for a nice little meal while people watching on the street.
The atmosphere is great - with outdoor seating practically on the sidewalk, a great bar and nice indoor seating a bit away from the street.
Our waiter Joey was phenomenal - quick and pleasant and suggesting just the right wine.
We started with cocktails and an appetizer - my partner had the lemon soup which he loved and told me he'd come back just for that.
I had the beet salad, which had a lovely mixture of just tender yellow and red beets, with a generous amount of fresh, crisp greens, candied walnuts and blue cheese crumbles, but it was nearly ruined by the house vinaigrette. There was enough garlic in the dressing to stave off an entire horde of vampires, and the rest of it appeared to be a strong mixture of lemon, salt and vinegar. It would have been much nicer with something slightly sweet, perhaps a nice honey vinaigrette instead. You don't get a choice - unless you think to ask first.
We both decided on the Scottish Salmon for an entree, which was listed on the menu as a house specialty. It came with spinach rice and something they called green beans, but appeared to be just one step short of a beverage.
If I had to bet, I would have assumed the green beans came straight out of a can and then sat in a boiling pot for an entire afternoon. There were some flecks of "stuff" in them, but the whole mess was so overcooked that the flavor profile was more like wet cardboard so it was hard to tell what they were.
The salmon was mushy - frozen perhaps and then badly thawed? It did have a nice bright lemon caper sauce, which did little to help the texture. The spinach rice was nicely done and tasty. Portion size was typical restaurant fare - enough on the plate to feed two adults and a child.
For dessert we had the cheesecake, which my partner said was divine, and I had a vanilla custard thing that was served over bits of baklava and was very near a tira misu and was also great.
In the future I'd stick to the salads - but steer away from the house vinaigrette unless you are a garlic fan. The desserts - as we sampled them were also great, and you really can't beat the atmosphere if you like to people watch - and if you end up sitting facing away from the street, the kitchen is open to view and can be entertaining as well.
Cocktails, appetizers, two entrees, wine and dessert ran to about $75 per person, including a generous tip. It's not the waiters fault the food is overcooked so be...
Read moreYesterday afternoon was a simply horrible experience at Ethos.
Although I, and many of my friends, have enjoyed Ethos for a number of years, I will never give them my business again.
Here's the situation: my friend and I arrived with his 14 week old baby girl French Bulldog. We asked when we arrived if we were able to sit with her outside and we were told, "yes! Of course ". We were seated immediately and proceeded with our order. Frank was our server...and he was great!!
He brought us water for the puppy that we were holding on our lap. We ordered food and drinks, which were brought to us in the order requested. We began eating and ordered a second round of drinks. During this time, multiple servers stopped by to say hello to the puppy, as she was lying calmly on our laps (afraid to not be held due to her young age). Additionally, a conversation occurred between me and the manager, Daniel, and he never mentioned anything about the puppy during our brief interaction while he was moving a table
After about an hour, the manager, Daniel came over once our second round of drinks and food had arrived. He told us that we couldn't hold the Puppy on our lap and that she had to be placed on the ground.
As a note...had we been told this from the beginning, we would've completely understood and we would've chosen another place. But this was never mentioned until an hour into our meal. I explained this to Daniel, and I said that she's a puppy and needs to be held right now and that we could not do that to her (put her on the ground). At which point we were brought our check and asked to leave. The food had just arrived, as well as our new drinks. We were so offended with being asked to leave after already being there for an hour with the puppy on our lap the entire time, with no issue.
I then asked to speak to his Manager and Mimi came to the table. I explained the entire situation to her and I expected her to be understanding. But instead, she did nothing to make this better, and actually made it even worse. She took our sampler platter away, she was argumentative , and she only provided an attitude and lack of understanding over the facts of the situation. Essentially we were treated very rudely and we felt no option but to leave. This should never have happened after an hour of being there with a puppy on our lap. I understand rules,, but waiting an hour before mentioning the policy, and then debating us and ultimately ruining our meal, is unacceptable...
Read moreIf you're looking to taste authentic Greek cuisine with a personal touch, Ethos should definitely be on your radar. Our recent dining experience there was nothing short of magnificent, thanks to the delicious food, warm ambience, and exceptional service.
Every dish we tasted seemed to transport us directly to Greece, providing a gastronomic tour of traditional Hellenic fare that was incredibly authentic and high quality. The Greek salad was delightfully fresh, featuring crisp vegetables, and olives with a generous topping of feta cheese that crumbled perfectly. The Gyro, a rich, layered dish was tantalizingly spiced, delicately balancing the flavors of the potatoes and lamb. The authenticity of the flavors shone through each course, paying tribute to time-honored Greek recipes that were exquisitely presented.
Service at Ethos was extraordinary, and our server, Dave, played an integral role in enhancing our dining experience. Dave's attention to detail, intuitive service, and genuinely caring attitude truly set the tone for our evening. His adept knowledge of the menu and his suggestions helped us navigate through the varied offerings, and his timely and accommodating service ensured that all our needs were met. We felt not just served, but cared for, a sentiment that deeply resonated with us.
The entire staff at Ethos was friendly, efficient, and personable, contributing to the restaurant's congenial atmosphere. The seamless teamwork among the staff members was noticeable, and their collective efforts were instrumental in delivering an outstanding dining experience. Ethos is not just a restaurant; it's an experience - an immersion into the Greek culture and its culinary heritage. This place breathes a gust of the Mediterranean sea into every corner, not only through the authentic and high quality food but also via its hospitable staff, led by our wonderful server Dave.
To say we left the restaurant feeling grateful would be an understatement. We were not just satisfied, but profoundly impressed and already looking forward to our next visit. If you're seeking a dining experience steeped in authenticity, quality, and genuine care, look no...
