Umami Tavern - Bethlehem — Restaurant in Winder

We were excited to find this place close to the house but left disappointed. I will say that the server was sweet and attentive and the sushi rolls were pretty good. My husband and I ordered Ramen as well. The portion sizes were pretty small, and there wasn’t much broth. My husband’s tasted pretty good, but mine was so bad that I couldn’t eat it. The egg had a weird taste and did not taste fresh. The broth tasted like old seafood, and it was supposed to be a pork base broth. It was also incredibly bland. I very rarely ever send stuff back, but the soup was pretty pricey and it was gross so I didn’t really want to pay for something that I couldn’t even eat. I told the server that I didn’t like it and asked if I could get something else - I didn’t even ask to have it taken off of my bill. She told me that she couldn’t get me anything else or do anything about it because I gave my son some of it in a TINY bowl. I only took a few bites. She didn’t offer to make it right at all and just apologized. I usually tip pretty well, but it just didn’t feel right leaving a good tip when I had to pay $15 for the worst Ramen I’ve ever had and didn’t even eat. I do not recommend this place. Was excited to eat at this new spot. It was actually really good. There’s a lunch special before 3:00 that has some great deals, and the food was really high quality. I got the steak hibachi combo for $14. This was the best miso soup I’ve ever had, and I normally don’t really care for it. I also ate and enjoyed the salad and I don’t normally like salad. The dressing was good. The highlight though was the steak, which was delicious and the veggies it came with were also great. I got the steak medium rare, and it was a really juicy and tender filet. There was a lot of food, and the sauce that they were both served in was delicious. My girlfriend got the lunch sushi combo which was 3 rolls for $15. The options were mainly ‘cheaper’ rolls, but it was a lot of sushi and the fish was great. One of the rolls, the Christmas roll, had salmon and tuna and there were a lot of rolls. AMAZING. I've been to multiple Japanese places, and although it was pretty typical, the bar is set high. I got tonkatsu ramen, and it was delicious. The noodles were perfect, the soup was a little salty, but thats expected (and i don't mind all that much) the egg was perfect, and so was everything elts. My partner-in-crime got shrimp yakisoba and it was good. The shrimp didn't have much flavor, but overall good. (They hadn't had anything like it and they liked it so 🤷) We also got fried vanilla ice-cream and we loved it. It was a little melted but we didnt care all that much. Again, my partner hadn't had it before, and when i asked how they liked it, they said it was really good. As for service, our waiter was amazing.
