my husband planned a lunch there with me and my 16 year old daughter over spring break. I had the mixed greens with added grilled chicken. the salad was very fresh and the grilled chicken was amazing, personally I was not a fan of the poached pear in it and the biscotti crumble that was described to be in the salad, was hardly there, couldn't really say it was added. my husband had the steak salad and he said it was good. my daughter had the Mac and cheese because my husband recommended it since he loves Mac and cheese type food. my daughter didn't know if the Mac and cheese would be super super small since our usual experience with very expensive restaurants is the portions are very small so she had a side salad of mixed greens to go with it. what surprised me was that the Mac and cheese dish was a very large size and that is pretty amazing but my daughter couldn't finish it since she also had a side salad so my husband ate the rest of it since he is the one who really loves cheese. What I really didn't like about this restaurant is the waitress that served us. The waitress said very strange comments Like "wow of all the years working here I have never seen anyone polish off that Mac and cheese." my husband said he had eaten the rest. but truly the comment to me is unnecessary and really, she has never seen anyone finish it. Are you kidding me? it was too big for my daughter but to me it is a good size for a normal human like my husband and yes he was still hungry since the salad didn't suffice him. my daughter felt awkward afterwards since the comment from the waitress is so bizarre. she offers us the dessert menu and I order the carrot cake and my husband orders a ice cream with banana and my daughter ordered some other kind of ice cream. The waitress brings the carrot cake and I am shocked now at how teeny tiny this silver of cake is and I do say to the waitress "wow is anyone able to eat all this carrot cake?" The waitress laughs loudly. I said the comment because honestly BARKING FROG.. your carrot cake slice is the absolute worst size I have ever seen in my life. save your $15 and go somewhere else for cake. I wish I had taken a picture of the stupid ridiculous small piece. Barking Frog you need to show your dessert before serving it as would have never ordered it. DERU carrot cake is far better than yours. And also, I find it odd how waitresses and employees say the stupidest things about how much people eat or don't eat. I am an athletic lean person and yes I enjoy healthy food but seriously who would go to this fancy of a restaurant and waste any food. seriously, that is why I say it is strange to me for an employee to say "WOW I have never seen anyone eat all that. Then who is eating at your restaurant, I don't understand it. IF the food is gross then yes don't eat it , but yes the food is good and high quality so why waste it . I just don't understand the ridiculous carrot cake tiny tiny silver of a slice. When the waitress came back to get our plates I said to her " I am disappointed". she said "why you'd didn't like the carrot cake?" I said "no, it was ridiculously too small". She said "would like you another one". I said "no, but only if it is free". I am making a point here. The waitress put a terrible taste in my mouth and made the whole time there awkward. yes barking frogs Mac and cheese and salads were great sizes but the dessert is not. the comments from the waitress were...
Read moreI visited Barking Frog for Seattle Restaurant Week and the experience was, well, not what I expected.
I entered the restaurant a few minutes after it had opened, noticing a few other tables had already been seated. No one was at the maitre d’ stand, nor were they at the tables, so I stood there until I was greeted by a friendly face. She welcomed me in, I gave my name, she acknowledged it, then walked away as another woman, presumably the hostess, came from behind the bar or kitchen area and asked for my name again. She showed my party of two to the dining area and stood between two tables, never motioning to the one where we were supposed to sit. I had to ask which one, she hesitantly said we could choose, so we picked one, she put the menus down and left.
Our waiter was pleasant. He was quiet, but attentive. The rest of the waitstaff did an excellent job delivering our courses and refilling our water.
Now to the food, the real reason we came back, after having such an amazing experience in 2019. We selected the Seattle Restaurant Week menu and added the bread basket. The bread and butter were slightly cold, but overall, tasty. I ordered the foraged morels and first-cut asparagus for the first course. The pickled rhubarb added much needed flavor to the beautifully-presented dish. For the second course, I ordered the sunchoke and Oregon black truffle risotto. Not only was it incredibly bland, but the rice was crunchy. I struggled through the small amount that was given and continued eating the bread. For dessert, I shared the coconut tres leches cake and coffee ganache bar! These desserts saved the entire night! They were outstanding! The presentation of each - flawless. The coffee ganache bar was delicious and decadent. The coconut tres leches cake was complex and had me craving more!
I realize so much has changed since 2019, but based on the glowing reviews Barking Frog has received over the last six years, my expectations were high for the evening. Overall, the whole experience was just ok. The desserts were the most memorable part of the night. I wouldn’t return for dinner, but I would potentially give...
Read moreI was in the area and had heard such great things about these trio of restaurants I had to come try. Started at the Fireside Lodge sitting at the bar top. The bartender while busy slinging drinks still gave me such a personable experience. He recommended I try the Artemis and it was so fun to taste the change in sweetness as I got closer to the bottom. After a couple drinks and some amazing appetizer recommendations I headed to the Barking Frog.
From the moment I stepped into the Barking Frog I was worried I was out of place because it was so stunning. It has a beautiful fire top in the middle with view into the kitchen so you can watch them work their magic. Kimmy was my server, bartender and Sherpa through this experience. She was so patient while I asked about drinks and I can’t wait to bring my whole family to meet her.
I started with the steak tartare which was stunning. Instagram perfect. But the real reason I am leaving this review is for the egg yolk ravioli I got for my entree.
If you have made it this far in my review just know the egg yolk will ravioli has changed my idea of what a well balanced meal should taste like. Served with perfectly roasted mushrooms, a homemade pesto and a runny egg in pasta I was almost speechless. I don’t like mushrooms and I would have fought my mother over this dish. The pesto was clearly freshly made and had my inner garlic girl happy. I’m not joking I love to cook and love food and this ravioli was like nothing I have ever experienced.
With a full belly I thought surely I had descended in to Valhalla and had already texted my whole family photos of the meal so they were properly jealous. Then Kimmy told me about the trio of house made ice creams. The flavors were vanilla, spicy raspberry and a porter ice cream. With dessert I ordered my first glass of Sherry which poured over the vanilla ice cream was my second favorite bite.
I will be stalking your menu as you change the seasons cause I’ll have to come back and try all the new creations you guys come up with as you have set the new standard of what a well balanced...
