COOL HAND LUKE'S, YUBA CITY, CA: My husband and I came in for dinner early, just as the doors opened, at 4:00 p.m. THE SERVICE: Two people who came in at the same time as us were seated immediately, but we had to wait (What? Why?). After being seated we ordered and waited a reasonable time for our appetizer, but our bread and beans (arrived cold) didn't come until just before they brought our dinner out, and my bar drink didn't come at all until the dinner came--very, very slow. There were no refills on the bread and none on the beans (no meat in the beans, either); my husband did get refills on his drink, however. Our waitress was pleasant and professional. THE FOOD: My husband ordered prime rib medium rare, and salad with blue cheese and baked potato, loaded; I ordered baby back ribs, beef stew, and baked potato, loaded. Immediately, we stopped the order as we saw my husbands prime rib was nearer to medium well than medium rare. Another cut was brought--this one was a, medium, still not a medium rare--with an apology, that there were no medium rare cuts. Apparently, the whole prime rib roast had been overcooked and there were no rare to medium rare cuts available! We were assured that $10.00 would be deducted from his ticket item. We then began eating. I ate my beef stew--guess what, NO BEEF in the beef stew. My stew was all vegetables, so thumbs down, even though it tasted pretty good. How can you have beef stew without beef? I then started eating my ribs and the smaller end of my ribs were also over cooked and exceedingly dry. I did not complain, as I had already eaten a sufficient portion in the middle, and didn't want to slow the meal any further. Apparently, all the meat had been overcooked. I ate my potato, and it was cooked perfectly, and was delicious. The appetizer, eaten earlier, bacon wrapped prawns, was also delicious. When my vodka drink finally got to me, it tasted fine, if a little weak on alcohol (to be expected). DECOR: The background music is country western, very nice for the setting; it isn't too loud, and gently pervades the atmosphere. the booths are generous, and movable, allowing them to be adjusted, as needed, and lighting is soft and nice, neither too dark or too bright. The decor is quaint and charming. It has been well thought out and is quite cute (?)--I don't know if that's the right word. It is homey and makes for a comfortable conversational area. The bathrooms have always been clean, well decorated, and comfortable. All the times I have eaten here, I have never run into anyone who was obnoxious. Everyone, has been pleasant, kind, and professional. CONCLUSION: Incorporating what I have told you, above, and even if most of the food tastes good, remember, this is a STEAKHOUSE. The meat should be cooked to perfection. That is why we come here. To get good meat! Virtually everyone comes here to get good meat. Clean bathrooms, good decor, nice people, they still need meat cooked perfectly--three stars is all...
Read moreI've lived here for 4 years and couldn't wait to finally try Cool Hand Luke's Steak. Wish I hadn't.
It starts with waitress telling us there's a 10 to 15 min wait while I'm looking over her shoulder and the dinning room is empty. Finally get a booth after waiting for a beer for over 15min sitting at bar. Ends up being 4-5 tables total with people all crammed in a back room and Hella loud because of it.
We get seated and the people around us are restless complaining they haven't been asked to order, where's my food and so on.
We order at the same time the table across asks can we order it's been forever. The waitress explained to them in front of everyone the waitress is having some type of break down. Seriously you just threw your co-worker under the table.
Now to the food. Ordered New York strip med........ Came out Hella well done gross. I never send food back. My date ordered steak bite dinner that was 80 percent mushroom with very little meat when separated. Food was not great by far. I've had better steaks at the place down the street that starts with an S has a few Zs and has a salad bar.
Once we were done we asked for boxes she brings 1 for 2 plates of food and beef stew that my date thought was delicious. Takes so long coming back I start looking for my own box. Once we got the bill we already knew just walk up front or we will never get out of here.
I'm in management and the problem here is you don't have a team. A team of people who have each other's back and pick up where one might fall off. It seem like no one that worked in restaurant even liked each other.
Unfortunately for the price I can't afford to take this risk again. I rather pay more for a top notch steak.
I hope you can figure out your management and employee issues it's clearly the problem. Probably a great place to eat when the train is...
Read moreWe did drive later in evening than most would ( approx 8 pm) , but no one, not a soul, was at the hostess position to greet us. We waited for quite a few minutes...long enough for the bar tender to notice and for me to look around the corner to see if anyone was in the kitchen area. What I saw was someone on their cell phone while folding napkins. Amber finally came to our rescue and assured us that they were not yet closed, and seated us. Her service was lovely, efficient, informative, and attentive. The food was not horrible, but disappointing. Plating/ presentation had me laughing...and I almost sent theseared Ahi back. The broccoli was actually aged upside down with huge stalks to the sky! The Ahi was somewhat thrown into the lettuce. With minimal concern ....like I said...hilarious. Ahi didn't smell bad...and was tasty. The wasabi was perfect. Greens nice if not well presented. Broccoli barely cooked, but I like it that way. It smelled odd though which gave us pause. The filet mignon however was ....sad. Correctly cooked Med rare..but dry on the outside as of it sat for a while longer than it should. Lobster on the edge of " iffy" just not worth the price tag. Whoever was the chef tonight should be embarrassed. Not worth the cost of the meal. Kind of disappointing as it was a birthday celebration dinner. Cannot fault Amber though...she was a...
