Today 02/26/23, my three year old daughter and I went into our first Black Bear Diner in Yuma Arizona. The establishment looked homey and whimsical and was rated as a good place to take kids. I don't know where those reviews came from...
We arrived around 330pm and got a booth seat. The host that sat us promptly brought us drinks which was nice, of course that was the last good thing that happened to us. We sat for about 30 minutes before anyone came to help us. I watch two other tables be seated, one served immediately. The other, a waitress noticed they hadn't been helped and after some talk with another waiter they went to serve them. All the while me and my 3 year old sitting there, empty drinks, no food, no contact. Eventually, a waitress came up and asked us if we were ready to order. No "Hello", no "Sorry for the wait" nothing, just a sterile canned question. Which was pathetic considering while I was sitting there waiting all that time I read all the flyers the restaurant had available, one of them with creeds on it. And one of the creeds was to have family like hospitality and no slick canned service which is exactly what we got.
Anyway my daughter was still hanging on for some fries so instead of walking out (what I wanted to do) we ordered a chicken strip kids meal and a Bob's big bear burger. The waitress asked if I'd like cheese on it, I said "yes, American".and that was the end of our curt service. She left, supposedly to go put the order in. After another 10 minutes a different waitress arrived with food. My daughter's chicken strips and my burger, but with unordered and unwanted bacon, which I don't eat. I said as much and also said no one asked me if I wanted bacon, or a deluxe burger. I just wanted the regular Bob big bear burger. I was asked about cheese and that was it. So the burger was taken back (which I hate doing) and after another 5-10 minutes a different waitress brought it another burger.... also with bacon on it. At this point I lost all faith in these waitresses, this establishment, and Black Bear Diner altogether. I told them to forget about the burger, since it was apparent that they couldn't figure out how to make the burger with basic specifications after two attempts. I paid for my daughter's chicken strip, even though I shouldnt have, and left because I wanted to get as far away from this absolute failure as possible. No one offered to comp her $6 kids meal. No supervisor or manager came over to the table to say anything about the dismal incompetent service. Nothing. They just let me walk out. A travesty. It blows my mind how you managed to open 143 stores if this is how you operate. I guess it makes sense why I have never heard of your restaurants prior to this visit, even though I travel all over the...
ย ย ย Read moreWorst restaurant experience in 58 years of marriage. We chose Black Bear Diner because they were serving Prime Rib on Christmas Day. When we arrived with a party of 9, we were told there was. 45 minute wait. Not surprising , because not many places were open on Christmas. It was only a 30 minute wait. So far so good. Our server arrived promptly and took our beverage order. Still good. We said we were ready to order and when the first person said Prime Rib she replied โWeโre out!โ. GASP!!! There was no other choices of restaurants, so we browsed the menu and placed our orders.. Four decided to have the Turkey special, 2 chose Chicken fried steak, 1 breakfast, 1l Fettuccine and I ordered Crispy Chicken Cobb salad. (hold the Bleu cheese). Salads were delivered about 10 minutes later to everyone but me and the breakfast. 15 minutes later the meals arrived, except for mine. They had put Bleu cheese on mine which I cannot eat. They were making another. About 15 minutes later it arrived, totally covered with chopped purple onion. At least a 1/2 cup. I removed most of it but by then my eyes were tearing up so I could hardly see. Everyone else was almost through eating since I had to wait for mine but II managed to eat about half of it, picking through it looking for the chicken which was pretty scarce.. Now the waiting game. Our server chose to ignore our table as she took orders from several others and deliver other meals. We finally flagged her down and she asked the 4 people who had ordered the turkey special if they wanted to have their pie at the table or to go? In one voice they saidโTO GO!!โ. so sway she went returning 10 minutes later with 4 to go boxes. THEN she asked if any of the rest of us wanted dessert. โNO!โ we-all said.. But we would like some boxes for the corn bread. Away she went again. Returning with the boxes she asked if there would be anything else. โ A bag for the boxes would be nice, and do you still have a chocolate pie to go? Away she went again. We packed up the boxes and waited once again as she hurried past our table with note pad in hand or plates of food. finally we got her attention and asked for our bills.. We saw her going in and out of the kitchen and back to the serving station and waited and waited. Finally she brought the chocolate pie and our bills. None of them were right, but they were close enough that we decided to just pay them and get the heck out of there! I understand that they were busy and it was getting close to their early Christmas closing time. Black Bear is not an elegant dining type of place, but they used to have decent food and good service. I guess those days are over...
ย ย ย Read moreVery sloooooooow service! We entered the restaurant and was greeted within 3 minutes. The young lady asked how many people in your party? My daughter responded with 2 adults and a high chair. Well that just threw that poor hostess off her rails. Even at the table she wasn't sure how many people she was seating. My daughter took her daughter to the restroom to change her and the waitress approached me asking me what everyone wanted to drink. I asked if she could please wait for the girls to return to the table. We never saw her again. About 15 minutes later we now have a waiter. He brings us our drinks (sweet tea) and the tea tasted very old, it takes at least ten minutes for him to come back to the table. We counted 4 tables that were occupied 3 had food served to them and we were table 5. They each had 2 people at a table, we had 3 counting the toddler. So we tell him the tea tastes old and he goes and is back very quickly with 2 more. These are unsweetened and still taste old. Which we immediately informed him. This becomes a 3 ring circus so I opted for water. My daughter shared her toddler's milk. We sit there for another 20 minutes when another waiter walks by and we get his attention and ask if anyone is going to take our order. He takes our order which takes 32 minutes for us to get. We ordered a cheeseburger and fries for the 2 year old and we both got the tri-tip French dip she got fries, I ordered potato salad. The salad was delicious. But I was still smelling the waiter's cologne. I took a few bites of my sandwich and my daughter asked me what was wrong. I told her it tastes burnt. She asked are you sure it's not from his cologne? The bread, meat nor was the cheese burned. We took both sandwiches home with us. Warmed them up. Made fresh au jus and the meat still tasted burnt. Even our dogs wouldn't eat the meat! This left us wondering if the outer meat had burned and was removed but the restaurant didn't realize the smell permeated all of the meat. I personally won't go back again. Super slow service, very old sweet tea replaced by old unsweetened tea, unusually long wait times and very poor service! Someone needs to tell the waiter not to bathe in his cologne. Not good for customers who have...
