Athena Souvlaki is a gold mine of good eats. With a cozy atmosphere and friendly staff, this place whips up some seriously delicious food. And I’m willing to say that they have the best sandwich this side of the Aegean.
The lamb souvlaki is pure perfection: the grilled lamb, the fresh tomatoes, those perfectly cut fries, and an amazing tzatziki sauce all wrapped in a pita bread that is fluffy, crispy and chewy, all at the same time—what is it that makes it so good?…a secret ingredient maybe?
The Dip Plate is also excellent. The hummus and baba ganoush are silky smooth. There is a zing in there that is divine. Again…that bread! Wow!
You’d be foolish to skip dessert. The carrot cake is amazing. And that glaze topping might be the best thing I’ve ever tasted.
Whoever is back in the kitchen has some mad skills. Everything was off-the-charts good.
I dug the environment too. The choice of music was an especially nice touch. Whoever thought of putting heavy doses of Chet Baker and Bill Evan in the mix is simply brilliant!
All in all, this is a great place. After going back multiple times to eat the lamb souvlaki, I felt a little bit like Dan Gorske, the man who has eaten over 30,000 Big Macs, when he says, “Man, this is the perfect sandwich, you know. At least for me it is.” ...
Read moreMy wife and I had dinner at Athena. Ordered a pita bread/smoked eggplant entree, and two chicken souvlaki wraps.
Our wraps were tasty and much bigger than expected. However, the eggplant dip, which I had to follow up on, wasn’t served until we had almost finished our wraps, and neither of us were keen on the flavour.
We sat inside hoping it would be a little cooler, but NOT so. There was only one wall fan and it was totally inadequate. We definitely made the wrong move.
Without meaning to be too critical, the one thing that let things down was the service :
we actually had to ask for drinks after being seated for about 10 mins, despite being given a menu right away. My wife’s bottle of water wasn’t cold (my beer was) and no ice or glass were offered as previously mentioned, our entree was delivered out of turn and had to be followed up. people next to us ordered their meals, but the waiter delivered them to the wrong table. After taking them back and leaving them on the counter for 5 mins or so, he eventually served one, but the other was left until I pointed it out to the customer, who brought it to the waiters attention.
Maybe we visited on a bad night, and what we experienced service wise, is out of the norm given the restaurants reasonably high rating. I hope this...
