I visited as this restaurant was really near my hotel and I read from the reviews that it was good (and tourist-friendly). However, I didn’t have the best experience with one of the waitresses, who had long hair, was short and slightly chubby. I ordered in English while using a hand signals, she gave me cues she understood, and even responded in English. I ordered morning glory, butter prawn and small clam soup. I specifically remembered telling her multiple times I wanted butter prawn, telling her “no” to steamed prawn and asking her if there’s butter. She said yes and showed no confusion to my communication. Furthermore, I’m a solo traveller, I told her I wanted small soup (once again hand signalling to her I wanted small) and pointing at the price tag for small. Once again, she said ok and asked no questions.
When the dishes came, I was shocked. 2 of 3 dishes came out wrong? Only the vegetable was correct. Firstly, she gave me a LARGE clam soup — I saw the big bowl, I knew something was wrong and asked her colleagues if it was small or large size. Although they couldn’t comprehend, they didn’t pretend to understand and we used a translator to communicate. I learnt that the waitress ordered a large for me. I don’t even understand why she decided to give a solo traveller a LARGE soup, especially if I pointed small. Wouldn’t it be logical to know that I couldn’t finish a large soup as I ordered 3 dishes? Was it because I’m a tourist and she thought I was gullible? Or was it because she didn’t care about her job at all? The prawns also came in the wrong flavour, it was steamed — which if you recall, I told her no.
Luckily, her male colleagues are very kind to communicate through translator and changed my order to the correct ones. When they asked her why she made these mistakes, it was clear she was very angry and shouted to her colleagues across the restaurant. Her service attitude really made the experience horrid, it didn’t even seem like she enjoyed working there either. Furthermore, if she didn’t understand I would be more than happy to use a translator, just like her male colleagues who weren’t afraid to clarify.
Would give it a 2 star if it’s just based on the experience with the lady. However, the guys did well in service recovery so I am giving...
Read moreI found this restaurant in the Michelin guide and generally their suggestions are impressive I've been to several bib gourmand locations and it has always been a pleasant experience that is until I went to this specific place.
Nothing that I'm going to say is about the local flavors of food, I understand that there are regional differences in cuisine so when they brought me garlic butter that tasted like sweet cream which had no garlic or butter notes in the flavor profile, though I was surprised I did not hold it against them, I did however ask if that was actually the garlic butter and they did say yes and confirmed it for me.
The seafood of course was exceptionally fresh as they have tanks of live seafood where you can choose exactly what you would like and how it will be prepared, so for freshness sake I cannot complain.
The reason that I scored this particular restaurant poorly comes from two very specific things The first is that everything arrived to the table overcooked, The the prawns were tough to the point of difficult to chew, The scallops were also severely overcooked to the point that they were rubbery and no longer sweet, . I ordered some fried squid that also was difficult to chew, however, the biggest reason that I would rate this place low is because the squids were not cleaned properly.
Most of the time when you prepare fried squid you remove the beak, you remove the pen the hard cartilage rib that runs the length of their bodies, you remove their guts and internal organs and then the animal is considered ready to be cooked.
The squids came to my table with their pen still inside one of which stabbed me in the mouth and throat as I tried to take my first bite and none of their internal organs had been removed.
So not only was my first bite amazingly painful due to being stabbed on the inside of my mouth by an inedible piece of the fish I also got a mouthful of bitter slimy horrible tasting squid intestine.
I will say that the staff when they came to understand my agitation at what I've been served did remove it from the bill and they apologized letting me know that if I were to come back they...
Read moreFirst night in Da Nang Vietnam and accidentally stumbled upon this restaurant, Be Ni 2, as the other more popular restaurant had to wait an hour.
I came here as I saw 8000 over great reviews and with a rating of 4.8stars. Only when I was paying the bill, did I notice that this restaurant appeared on Michelin Bib Gourmand! It was definitely worth it.
Arrived at 715pm, and although the restaurant was packed, I got my 1-pax table immediately and was facing the hordes of people choosing the live seafood and pricing board, with all the prices clearly stated and transparent, no hidden costs.
The waiter (forgot to get his name) spoke English to me and recommended the style of cooking and the weight of each seafood which I selected. His recommendations were all spot on!!!
Dishes ordered:
Atmosphere: 4 out of 5 stars, as this place is quite noisy with different nationality people and some large groups can be quite noisy. Non-air conditioned.
Value: 5/5
Service: 5/5, they helped me cut the squid into bite size pieces and peel the shell of my prawns. The waiter came back and checked on me to ensure that the food was good and the service staff were constantly clearing my empty plates or topping up the tissue box.
Will definitely return to this restaurant again when I visit Da Nang! Total cost: Around VND850,000 / USD$33. This place is definitely 5 stars for me; The tastes are out...
