Catching up with friends, we decided to check out this place, an izakaya-style restaurant known for its vibrant atmosphere and inventive Japanese dishes. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by enthusiastic staff who shouted greetings in Japanese, setting the tone for a lively dining experience.
As we settled into our seats, the chef behind the counter caught our eye. He was wielding an oversized wooden paddle, which we later learned was a "shamoji," traditionally used to stir rice. But at Shamoji, it serves a more theatrical purpose. Whenever a customer orders a special dish, the chef dramatically bangs the paddle on the counter, shouting the order to the rest of the kitchen. This spirited performance instantly had everyone’s attention and added an extra layer of excitement to the meal.
But the real highlight of the night was when one of our friends mustered up the courage to try the "Gyoza Challenge"—a massive plate of gyoza dumplings that, if finished in a certain time, earns you a spot on the wall of fame and a free meal.
