Let me tell you, after a long morning exploring Ho Chi Minh City, I was starving. I'd heard whispers of this legendary bánh mì place called Bánh Mì Huynh Hoa, and it wasn't far from where I was. Now, I'm not gonna lie, there was a bit of a wait. This tiny shop seemed to be a local favorite, and there was a steady stream of people coming in and out. But let me tell you, it was worth every minute. The second I took a bite of their bánh mì, my taste buds did a little happy dance. The bread was perfect - crusty on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. It cradled a symphony of flavors: savory slices of pork, a cool and refreshing pate, some kickin' chilies, and a tangle of pickled vegetables that added a nice crunch. Everything was so fresh and perfectly balanced. Now, be warned, this isn't some fancy sit-down place. It's a grab-and-go situation. But honestly, that kind of added to the charm for me. It felt like a real slice of Ho Chi Minh City life, tucked away on a bustling side street. So, if you're looking for a cheap, delicious, and authentic bánh mì experience, then Bánh Mì Huynh Hoa absolutely deserves a spot on your itinerary. Just be prepared to wait a bit, and maybe grab some napkins - things can get a little messy, but in the best way possible!

As they say, if you can only eat one banh mi this is the place. I noticed many first-timers were confused on arrival just like me. There are two shops. The first one you see walking in from the roundabout apparently is for online order/delivery queue/pickup. The second shop a few stores down is for walk-ins/take-outs (left shop in photo). At this second shop you likely see a queue. These are customers who already ordered/paid at the left side ordering counter and now queueing in the right side with order ticket in hand waiting for their sandwich to be made. If the delivery/pickup queue at the first shop clears, a staff member in front of the second shop will redirect some in the second shop queue to go queue at the first shop. The queues come in waves though. I bought mine take-out and with the herbs and pickles packed separately it is best to take it back to my hotel room to assemble everything then eat as it gets messy. I did not see an eat-in area. Cost was 68k dong. Round the left corner of the next side street is another popular banh mi shop Banh Mi Hong Hoa known for its crispy roasted pork. And if you continue walking down to the main road and turn left is a popular banh mi street stall Banh Mi 37 Nguyen Trai known for its pork patty banh mi.

Best Banh Mi in town! From the moment we arrive, all we can see are Grab drivers lined up to collect their orders and we are expecting a serious wait. Thankfully the drivers tell us that ‘our’ access is a couple of doors down. Once again, another eatery that has become so popular that they have acquired a second location close by! Much to our relief the queue is only a few deep (even though the first customer is picking up 20 Banh Mi’s!) and we order at the window to our left. The line moves to the right and we wait patiently whilst watching the team at work. This is a well oiled machine and they move through the orders very quickly. Finally it’s our turn and the Banh Mi is packed with the ‘fresh’ produce in a separate bag. We’ve not seen or had it this way before but definitely enjoyed building our own! Once completed we could not believe how tasty this was and hands down one of the best in Vietnam! There was so much filling that we shared one between us so bring your appetite! Would absolutely recommend!!

The biggest Bánh Mì I have purchased! Wow. I personally could not finish this in one setting and took the leftovers home. It was a little confusing at first when we arrived. There were two lines, one for Grab delivery pick ups and another for customers. You need to purchase a ticket on the far left first before you join the line to pick up your Bánh Mì. Luckily one of their staff stood outside and advised us where to go and what to do when we were displaced. Once we picked up our order, the dine in area was completely packed. We went across the street to cafe Lê Gia, where they kindly allowed us to use their space to eat our Bánh Mì after we ordered some drinks. The Bánh Mì was delicious. The accompanying herbs and pickled vegetables were packed separately so they could remain fresh if you decided to eat a little later, or in my case, ended up with some leftovers. We arrived around 3pm and witnessed long lines. I cannot imagine what it may be like during peak hours!

Much to the surprise and disbelief of practically everyone, never in my life had I eaten a bánh mì. Given the sheer number of places that sell bánh mì in Saigon, it must be incredibly popular, and I had found myself curious to try one. Huynh Hoa has a very positive online reputation, so that's where we ended up... Ordering our food was a simple matter of handing over money and being told to go to the other window. I guess you just get what you get? Given that I have nothing previous of which to compare the quality and flavours of my meal, and the fact that I thoroughly enjoyed it, this is the BEST bánh mì I have ever eaten!! Crispy yet soft bread roll, huge slabs of tasty meat looking things, some delicious sauce like stuff, and it also came with a couple of bags of foliage for a bit of DIY sandwich fun. It was a big, tasty, and slightly confusing experience, and I would do it again. I could actually go one right now...

This was my first stop when arriving to HCMC. I was really looking forward to trying this place out and had high hopes. Unfortunately, the Banh Mi was not edible and I just threw the entire thing away after 3 bites. Because they are busy, the guys putting the sandwiches together rush through the process and are very sloppy and careless when putting on ingredients such as mayo and pate. This leads to an uneven distribution of ingredients and just a gross tasting sandwich. There were also no vegetables in the sandwich, and they included a very tiny amount in a small plastic bag for you to put on yourself. Then there is the price. I get the banh mi is large, but that isn’t really anything special when you are paying 2x the price of a regular banh mi. 68k VND is ridiculous, but would be justifiable if the sandwich at least tasted good. I would not recommend anyone come here, this is just a tourist trap.
