In the centre of the Saigon’s famous backpacker area, 23/9 Park is a must know for anyone who travels to Ho Chi Minh City. This park is a great introduction to the vibrant commercial hub that is Saigon. Take a seat outdoors and watch or talk with a range of people from all over the world, speaking all sorts of different languages.
The Saigonese use this park as an exercise ground, a meeting spot and a classroom. Groups of people gather here to talk and relax in the evenings, families bring their children to play under the trees and young couples hide in the shadows. On the weekend 23/9 Park is especially full, and every evening a number of ladies’ exercise classes take place which, with their booming dance beats and krumping middle-aged mothers, are seriously a must-see whilst you are in Ho Chi Minh City. Feel free to join if you wish!
Groups of students studying English also visit this park regularly to talk with the travelers who seek refuge in its cool shade. Grab a bite to eat and a drink of water and take a seat next to the grass to wait for someone to approach you. They’re all very friendly and nice to talk to, and most will talk with foreigners in groups. They may even invite you for a beer or a smoothie after, or take you to their favourite eatery!
Given its many groups of students, families and other locals, 23/9 Park is a good place to learn about local life when you visit Ho Chi Minh City. Sit in the shade of a tall tree and relish a momentary break from the chaotic streets of Vietnam’s busiest city, chat with someone new and learn about their life, plan your travels or enjoy a cool drink as you get ready to speak English to a...
Read moreNice place to exercise for free, morning time they have locals doing tai chi which you can probably participate too and many more physical activities. When you're a foreigner the food vendors will come there a bit of a nuisance as they overcharge but you can haggle with them just say no a few times and the prices drop but there are better ways to get things at a better price. The banh mi is the local sandwiches very affordable at day they are 20000$ dong less than 2$ usd in the day time they go up 10000$ dong so 30000$ dong (still under 2$ usd 😉). The shoe cleaners are sometimes quite aggressive and will start cleaning without you say so. If they get too much you can always say or pretend to call police on you phone they'll flee At night the dynamic changes but still a pretty safe area to be in be aware of your pockets at night when its crowded. The park is well taken care of but it's a big city expect rats but they're more afraid of you than you are of them. They will offer you "girls" around that area as well which gets annoying but it's part of the area and a way they make a living so dont get offended since many tourist are there only for that. Politeness will only get you so far if you're tired of them and they are being too aggressive like previously said just pretend to call police! Be aware of your surroundings at all time this will save you from a lot of grief. Very beautiful area Saigon is truly worth the...
September 23rd Park stands as an urban oasis in central Ho Chi Minh City, offering a unique atmosphere amidst the city's bustle.
Spanning approximately 11,000 square meters, the park features large trees providing pleasant shade, harmoniously blending with lawns and natural ponds. Mornings and evenings are particularly lively with health-conscious visitors. Some use fitness equipment, others jog, and families play with children - each finding their own way to enjoy the space.
The park holds historical significance. Named after September 23, 1945, when French troops opened fire in Saigon, triggering the war in the South, it was developed in 2002 on the former site of Saigon Station.
Location is a key advantage. Within walking distance of Ben Thanh Market and Bui Vien Street, it's perfect for breaks between sightseeing. The underground Central Market offers various Asian cuisines.
Seasonal events add vibrancy, with cherry blossom and spring flower festivals regularly held. Musical performances often bring special energy to the park.
However, challenges exist. Some areas lack adequate lighting at night, raising security concerns. Popular times can get crowded, and certain facilities show signs of insufficient maintenance.
Still, September 23rd Park truly serves as a city oasis - an ideal spot to step away from urban chaos and enjoy peaceful moments.
