I’m a pro chef and been to Vietnam 4x with a total time of 6 months traveling the entire country primarily for finding food. It might have been the single worst dining experience of my life. It took me maybe 3 hours before my mind could stop reeling from what had just transpired. First off it was my mistake as I had meant to go to a well known bahn mi shop nearby but I stumbled upon this one and saw a crowd so assumed it was the place I was looking for. It was incredibly unorganized and you have zero way of knowing who is taking orders, making orders etc and they all seem to switch positions every few minutes as if unsure who is doing what. The traditional has piles of processed meat slices, no pate, no mayo, no seasoning on a piece of bread that was 5 minutes away from becoming a crouton... literally worse than what you’d find at the airport BUT with a menu price of 50,000 and then tacking on 10,000 for New Years. 60,000 for a bahn mi!! Ate half because I was starving. Threw the rest out and got a random bahn mi dac biet for 20,000 that was miles beyond this. I never write reviews or public comments but I was beyond compelled to do so. Guys, it’s Vietnam, there are tons of great examples to follow, you gotta step it up if you’re gonna ask 3x the normal price.
*I want to edit after the response by the owner. Yes you can compare prices that are $1-3 dollars because we are talking about literally increasing the cost of something by up to 200%. The sandwiches were made in middle of the dining area and had 3 people touching the sandwich as it changed hands between those who worked there. Operating restaurants I’ve also worked and staffed people for holidays and paid for overtime. It’s a calculated decision. If you can’t afford it, don’t do it. But you added the cost to the customer anyway so that’s not an issue I suppose. Lunch meats and cold cuts aren’t subjected to fluctuations in market prices. There wasn’t any meat on my sandwich that wasn’t processed. Bottom line is that the holiday should have zero impact on the consumer beyond whether you are open or not and secondly if you charge those prices don’t say that it’s just $1-2 and not a big deal. It’s a 200% price increase. I’ve had amazing bahn mi that also had overhead with staff and indoor dining but kept prices...
Read moreWas staying at a nearby guesthouse and walked in a few minutes before closing time hoping they would still be open after a long day… And to say I was warmly welcomed and given one of the best Bánh mì I’ve ever had is truly an understatement. The sweet lady running the place made the sandwich to order and the love she put into it showed. Got the chicken and vegetable one with the works on it, and every bite from first to last was so flavorful and fresh. The coriander and chili was a nice touch and the sauce was delightful. The bread had the perfect outside crisp and a soft inside as well. The restaurant is very charming and has a French cafe kind of feel to it. Such a relaxing vibe to unwind in with service and attention to detail second to none. Likewise, as I was on my way out I was given a good luck bracelet by the lady, which was absolutely sweet of her and warmed my heart :) If you’re in Sài Gòn - HCMC, I’d highly recommend stopping by! My best wishes and deepest thanks to the couple at...
