The cinema itself has a cool, vintage vibe and they often play older films in their “retro” releases. Sadly our experienced was ruined by staff’s lack of communication and rudeness.
We saw online that they had a menu so we wanted to check if we could have food delivered to our cinema. I asked two staff members, making sure to say which cinema and movie I was seeing, and both said yes (including the person who actually took the order). When I asked how they’d know where I was sitting (seats aren’t numbered) the person serving said “oh, we will just give you a missed call”. Now, based on that limited information I assumed I’d just have to wave them down or something - old school cinema old school system. But after a few missed calls I realised I probably had to go and get it.
I left the cinema to go and collect and the staff member delivering it was extremely rude. When I explained that I had asked when purchasing if it could be delivered to that cinema and they had said yes, instead of being kind and apologetic about the mistake, she became very short and kept stating that we aren’t in gold room so it can’t be delivered. I don’t work there, have never been there before, and confirmed with two staff members before ordering… please tell me how I would know that?
Then I asked for take away pizza boxes because it would be awkward to hold plates in the cinema and we probably wouldn’t eat it all. This is when things got worse. She got extremely short at this but went back to get the boxes. After quite a while, she comes back with one box… then rushes back to get another. She has then put the pizzas into DIRTY Dominos boxes! Who knows whether they were from our pizzas or if she fished them straight out of the bin! Moreover, nowhere on their menu does it say you are getting pizza from Dominos, it looks like they are making all their food. So they have gotten a pizza from the Dominos 100m down the road, put a 200%+ markup on it, and thrown it in a plate so it looks like they made it!
The time it took her to go and find “our” pizza boxes, 10 minutes of the film had been missed. Not once did she apologise for the mix up in communication, the time it took, or (worse) the used pizza boxes. In fact, she was clearly blaming me for the situation despite me having no idea about the processes as , once again, I don’t work there. I didn’t want to miss any more of the movie so I just took the pizzas and went back in.
All of the other staff were lovely, despite the lack of communication and understanding of processes. But I think there needs to be a refresher on what services are offered, customer service and, most importantly, food safety. Also, it’s very dodgy to be buying cheap takeaway and marketing it as your own food for a...
Read moreHighly rate the place! Always an awesome spectrum of movies of all varieties and styles. Finally saw a film in a different cinema being the Red Room. Have to say, not typically a fan of leather seating but I have been proven wrong with the comfort of this cinema so yep overall a brilliant room and liked the somewhat more intimate size. The Purple Room is generally comfortable, and when not overly packed you'll always find the perfect seat for viewing and listening, though even when it is there are beanbags to laze on and suitably wide seats so you don't get the impression you're being crammed in. The room acoustics is adequately balanced w/ tight lowend, sharp treble and immersive midrange, w/ sound quality not all hampered considering busy Brunswick St causes some extraneous noise to leech in, but that's only very minor and not at all an issue during the movies I've seen there. The facility itself has a welcoming ambience, matched with a classic layout from the foyer to the ticket booth except (and this is probably too critical) the staircase and the landing at the top is a bit narrow amidst those busy times, which is fairly often being a popular movie venue. Though really...it don't matter...with an ale or other in hand and a supressed appetite, with the well decent food about the area why fuss about trivial things such as a staircase and central waiting area. As you'll soon be situated in a immaculately clean cinema about to partake in a extremely pleasant film experience. People are well considerate also. One example, haven't come across a parent who couldn't acquire a babysitter or are overly attached so have brought their littlies to interrupt the attendees at will... On-street parking has its moments, but whatever it's free and a few hundred meter stroll (at worst) is nothing, compared to most other cinemas where the parking lots are near capacity, with the increased risk of having your vehicles bodywork scuffed or dinged up by people w/ slight carelessness and/or in a rush. The owners have done a smashing job bringing these cinemas back from the dead. If I could I'd give it...
Read moreFor film buffs this is one of the good cinemas. They show new films plus a healthy selection of older films giving voice to the classics which they so richly deserve. As a medium it might be easy to pass off movies as mere entertainment but any serious academic of social sciences knows the importance of film as an enriching form of text. I recently watched the restored Ziggy Stardust film. It was a total trip through the backstage corridors of David Bowie's formative breakthrough character on stage in his resplendent, garish, glittery glam rock, alien, storytelling persona. It was spectacular on the big screen in the restored version. Whatever your tastes or persuasion, there seems to be a great selection of art-house or festival films shown between the latest releases. As the filmmaker Wim Wenders says, the films that are the most political are the films that try the hardest not to...
