Gerties Bar and Restaurant — Restaurant in Brisbane City

Gerties in New Farm need to make big improvements in two areas: bar service and meal quality. We went to Gerties on a Saturday evening at the end of August. A waitress took our order for drinks quite quickly, but after waiting 20 minutes I asked when we could expect them. I was told there was only one barman and he was quite behind with his orders despite the place not being overly busy. We got our drinks after waiting 25 minutes. A fundamental aspect of running a bar is to get drinks to people asap so they can down them and buy another instead of thinking ‘let’s go somewhere else’. We didn’t go somewhere else as we’d ordered meals, which was a mistake because the three rump steaks we ordered were all very poor and mine was by far the worst I’ve ever been served in a restaurant. It was so tough and gristly that I had to spit four pieces into my paper napkin because they were unchewable. Some parts were just edible if I cut the piece wafer thin. I left half of it as it was so tough it was hard to cut even with a steak knife. When asked by the Manager/Owner if I’d enjoyed my meal, I told him about my steak. Did he even apologise? No, he just looked at me as if I was trying to scam him despite having already paid for the disaster. Gerties used to be good. I just went with my niece to Gertie’s tonight for a quick dinner and drink before heading to the powerhouse for a show. What a terrible experience!! I felt so embarrassed as I had chosen the place knowing its great location and I’d been there years ago for drinks which I enjoyed back then. Besides 1 other table we were the only patrons, but the ambience was disappointing. Lighting and candles on tables not alight, grubby windows and a piano that needed a good wipe over. The whole place needs a good scrub! Then we ordered olives for a starter and a margarita pizza with a rocket salad. The olives were so so ordinary. Then It took ages for the pizza to come out and when it was out in front of us, we just looked at each other and were dumbstruck for words. The pizza was anemic white, still with soft undercooked crust and I reckon a McCain frozen pizza would be better. After complaining the owner said he had new kitchen staff but he would get them to make another one. I explained our time was tight but he reassured us it won’t take too long. Absolutely dreadful experience. I went with as a group of 10 people for dinner. The menu was extremely limited and 3 out of 5 of the meals were unavailable. There were no starters on offer - except a bowl of peanuts! Every meal that came out was extremely under par. I ordered the cheese burger as did 2 others. It was really small, cold, had no flavour, the cheese was really hard to find and the rocket was old. The chips were also cold. A five year old would eat a bigger portion and it was $26!! If I wasn’t with other people I would have sent it back for a refund. The service was also appalling! Don’t eat here - absolutely horrible food, which all came out at different times, 10 minutes apart, and the service was terrible!
