Mawson's Huts Replica Museum is located in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. It is a museum that houses a faithful replica of the historic huts used by Sir Douglas Mawson and his Antarctic expedition team during the early 20th century. Here's some key information:

History: Sir Douglas Mawson was a renowned Australian Antarctic explorer who led the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914). His team established a base at Cape Denison in Antarctica, where they built huts to support their scientific research and survival.

Replica Huts: The museum features meticulously recreated replicas of Mawson's original huts. These replicas offer visitors a glimpse into the harsh living conditions and scientific endeavors of the early Antarctic explorers.

Exhibits: Inside the replica huts, you can find exhibits and artifacts that showcase the daily life, scientific work, and challenges faced by Mawson and his team. It provides insight into their achievements and contributions to Antarctic science.

Education: The museum serves as an educational resource, helping visitors learn about the history of Antarctic exploration, the importance of scientific research in extreme environments, and the pioneering spirit of Mawson and his colleagues.

Location: The museum is situated on the Hobart waterfront, making it easily accessible to both tourists and locals interested in polar exploration history.

Visiting Mawson's Huts Replica Museum is a fascinating way to step back in time and appreciate the remarkable achievements of early Antarctic explorers. It offers a unique opportunity to learn about the challenges they faced and the scientific discoveries they made in one of the most inhospitable...

A small but interesting museum dedicated to the Antarctic expedition of Sir Douglas Mawson. This is an oft forgotten part of Australian history and the mind boggles at the achievements over 100 years ago with the technology and knowledge available at the time. Mawson has got to be one of the luckiest men to ever have lived!

I liked that the expedition huskies got such good coverage in the exhibit, especially the ones that tragically died (RIP RIP). It is clear that the men loved these dogs.

The hut is a scale replica model of the one that still stands in Antarctica. It is hard to imagine 18 men living in this small space for such long periods of time. The centre living area is lovingly recreated with props. I had a good chat to the volunteer in here. By 4.45pm they were already starting to close up (closing time was 5pm) and as the last visitor there I felt I had to leave.

Its a quaint museum and the volunteers are lovely but the entrance price ($15 for adults) is far too expensive. I spent an hour here and read 85% of the content. There was only 5 other visitors during my time there. I know its a non profit but the cost is prohibitive - the same as the...

This unique museum is a remarkable tribute to Australia's pioneering Antarctic explorer, Douglas Mawson. The building itself is an exact replica of the original hut constructed in Antarctica, offering an authentic glimpse into the harsh conditions faced by early explorers. Inside, the museum provides a detailed and immersive illustration of life within the hut, complete with artifacts, tools, and stories from Mawson's legendary expedition.

The experience is both educational and inspiring, highlighting the resilience and ingenuity of Antarctic pioneers. The museum’s mission is equally commendable, with proceeds supporting ongoing research in Antarctica. It’s a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and anyone interested in understanding the legacy of Antarctic...

Upon recommendation from the Hobart information centre, we decided to have a look, not entirely sure as to what to expect. The museum was fantastic! The volunteers had a wealth of knowledge and personal experience to share. Hearing first hand from one of the volunteers about their time doing research, was very fascinating! It was great to see a mixture of both replica and archival pieces and learn more about the history of Mawson, his team, the dogs and the expeditions they endured. A special mention to the lovely man at the front desk, who greeted as warmly and gave us a great initial overview of what to expect inside. Overall an excellent experience, highly recommended.
