Read moreI had a great morning at the old Eastern Hill Fire Station; it's like a time capsule, and it totally fascinated me. Shout out to Pete, who gave me all the info I needed.
You can tour the station following the paper guide. However, the watchtower is currently off limits. It's being restored at the moment. The old Chiefs room, the old engine room, the old control room, etc. They are so well preserved that you could film a period drama there everyone would think it was a prop. Even the light switches are as old as the teeth and nails holding the place together.
The station has a few activities too. You can put on some old uniforms, there's a giftshop, interactive displays about the history of fire fighting in Melbourne etc.
It's also really important to the fire community, retired service men and women go there to socialise, talk to museum goers, give tours etc. Show your support, I got myself a t-shirt.

Read moreVery interesting, lots of little tidbits about the history of the fire services in Victoria, and some of Melbourne’s history. I learned things I didn’t know before! It’s such an extensive collection of memorabilia there are a number of items not kept on site as there is no room for everything! We felt very lucky to be able to see all the old fire trucks, uniforms and equipment all in one place. If you have children who are interested in fire trucks, they’ll definitely get a kick out of checking this place out. Entry for children under 5 is free and...
