This is the LOUDEST place I have ever stayed. While there are some very good qualities about this hostel, the noise from the street is truly insane, it's not even laughable. Cars and motorcycles race up and down the highway during the night and you can hear what pedestrians on the street are talking about. My window handle was broken when I checked in and didn't close properly, so the morning after I checked in and had my first night, I didn't sleep at all and approached the staff about refunding my unused nights so I could book alternative accommodation at my own expense and actually get some sleep during my vacation. They refused as they would consider it a cancellation as though I hadn't arrived for the booking. They came to offer me earplugs and fix the handle of the window so it shut properly but it didn't make much of a difference at all. Every room faces the street and the windows aren't double glazed despite being on a busy major highway because of the preserved history of the building. Couldn't believe that I was forced to stay at this place because the management didnt want their guest to be happy or comfortable during their stay. I don't need dead silence as I sleep with white noise, but this was unacceptably loud. Despite all this, the kitchen is well equipped, showers are hot, bed was very comfy and both the staff and the other guests very friendly and chill. They offer laundry facilities and while it isn't a party hostel, they have activities and events for all the guests to get involved in. Also a very convenient location for getting around. If the noise problem was sorted this would be a great place to stay. Other small issues I found during my stay was that the front reception wasn't attended very much, even when it was supposed to be open. They leave a sign with a number to call if they've gone away from the desk but I tried calling it a couple times and no-one answered so I had to go on a hunt around the property to find someone. Other guests said the same thing. Also the Wi-Fi quality is pretty poor as other reviews have mentioned. I'm attaching some videos of the noise from my room during the first night, so other's are aware of how loud it will be while they're trying to sleep. Edit: Changed to a new one star after management replied to review calling me a liar, stating the phone was answered. IT WAS NEVER ANSWERED!

Affordable Accommodation in the heart of Fitzroy Close to the Melbourne City and local markets. Close to St.Vincents Hospital Close to tram stops Rooms are reasonably tidy Bathrooms are a little old but the showers offer nice warm water Lots of stairs, the stairwell is gorgeous. This place is not suitable for someone who uses a wheelchair. Great communal kitchen setup with your own pantry box, and complimentary food stock for anyone to use. Top shelf in fridge is for anyone to use, so long as it's to be consumed within the used by date. The laundry room offers 2 front loader washing machines and 2 dryers, and an iron. The machines and dryer use a tap on payment system, with your bank card and a wash is $5.00 for a 34 minute wash and to dry your clothes its $5.00 for 40 mminutes. There's also free complimentary washing powder and fabric softener in the laundry for all to use. Two weighing scales in there too. A body length mirror also. The loungeroom and bathrooms require a tap on card to access them. It's a great set up. There's a lovely outdoor area to sit in, banana sun lounges to lay on too. Next door is a mad brekkie joint, reasonably priced yummy food and delicious coffee. There's one "only female" bathroom and toilet and there's a mixed bathroom and toilet. I stayed in a mixed dorm room, two sets of bunk beds, with black curtains on the side for privacy. I was blessed to have an australian guy stay in this dorm with me. He was quite a private guy but great company. Late night chats and he cheered me up too. In this dorm room, our bed space had a side light and usb port to charge your phone on. We had 4 locker cupboard spaces we could use to lock up any personal belongings in. Windows have no screens on them, but they only open up so far. Windows have roll down block out blinds on them. Staff are very friendly and supportive. The only negative thing about this business is mice. Being in the city, there's going to be mice. I saw a few in the Mansion, in the quiet area, in my bedroom and ladies bathroom. Despite the mice problem, I'd still return there if I had to stay there again. The place has a great vibe.

Sublime boutique hostel If you are planning to go out on the lash, and suspect you will likely return to the hostel horribly drunk (or intoxicated on other materials...), this lovely boutique hostel is not the hostel for you. For they have rules against tenants returning intoxicated: first offence they give you a warning, second offense they expel you. I love this, because it ensured that I got to enjoy a good night's sleep every night of my stay. My previous experience of staying in a hostel, which was at the Y*** in January 2020 (yes, just before COVID started to tantrum), was that of being woken up by a sort of drunken machine g*n fire, as one lad after the next returned to base - (often inconveniently spaced at 45 minute intervals, resulting in you being re-awoken numerously, as if the result of an evil recurring function) - stumbling over invisible furniture, and occasionally, heaving in the corner. But I experienced none of this at this good boy hostel, The Mansion, Melbourne. The tenants were polite and respectful, and joyous to meet, and every night's sleep was deep and sweet. So, if you're a respectful traveller who simply wishes to coexist in harmony with others, this is the hostel for you.

If you’re looking for a place that is flexible if you have a late flight or had a last minute change, this is not the place for you.

And oh btw if you pay a complaint about how inflexible they are, you get kicked out and told their hostel is not for you. For people in hospitality business, the way I was treated was sickening. The lack of simple human decency and the lack of empathy was completely appalling. I never leave reviews but I had to leave one here because of how bad a taste the staff’s treatment here left in my mouth. Maybe they’re also racially bias as well, who knows.

I had an absolutely terrible experience with this hostel. I had a late flight and informed them to which they said they couldn’t accommodate which is all fine and dandy. They told me I had to spend my first night elsewhere and circle back in the morning. When I asked to reduce my stay to remove the first night, they referred me to the policy where they can only change my reservation 3 days before the start date. I booked it the day before 😂. I eventually just found a place and let it go. The last straw for me was getting there the next morning after this whole roundabout journey and while checking in, I mentioned to the front desk lady that I was a bit dissapounted that they had no wiggle room for things like late check in or even changing my reservation since I had to pay twice for the same night. They immediately got defensive and claimed their policy as well as they don’t think this is the place for me and offered me my money back.

Honestly it was a cheap enough stay that the money was the least of my worries but to have that be your first reaction to me laying a complaint about my experience says a lot about the place and the kind of people that work here. Even though it was more of a hassle to leave than stay, the treatment I got there made it an easy decision for me.

After staying in so many hostels around the world for over 5 years and in Australia over the past couple of weeks, I have met and been treated way better in too many places to have stayed in a place that treated me like just another number in the book that they can do without. As a result I took my business elsewhere and I suggest you do too.

Edit: since Google won’t let me respond and you guys decided to lie and make outrageous comments about my experience. I became abusive?? That’s what you came up with??? Did that lie make you feel good or was it just a pathetic attempt to cover your butts since you know Google review does not let people respond to your reply??

For you to say my behavior crossed the line, my words that I so respectfully conveyed my experience with was so dangerous for you and your staff is laughable.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions, clearly you guys have a racial bias because no way you just tried to claim I was abusive even though we had a cordial conversation modulo the passive aggressive nature of it from your staff and the content of what was being said. Guys, for real, don’t book this place....

Perfect Hostel for long-term stay! I had a great time here. The Mansion is one of the smaller hostels, which I personally prefer. It is very spacious and there's plenty of room to find a quiet corner for yourself or socialise in the kitchen and in the TV room. Not sure how easy it is to socialise as a short-term stay, since most people know each other because they've been staying for several weeks (like me). But I suppose that always depends on the people that are there when you are:) The kitchen is unbelievably well equipped - even a sandwich maker (which is actually cleaned daily!!) and a rice cooker. (The only thing that could be replaced with new ones are the pans.) They change the sponges daily (which is unfortunately very rare in other hostels) and there's always fresh tea towels as well. Plenty of space to store your food and the free food shelf works super well! Rooms are quite basic but got everything you need - there's a plug and light at every bed, curtains that go halfway and if you're lucky, you'll get one of the beds with the pockets to hold small things like phones etc (could be improved so that every bed, especially top bunks get them). Beds are quite squeaky and mattresses are a bit too soft for my personal taste. There's shared bathrooms and private bathrooms which was great. They get cleaned multiple times during the day and therefor are usually clean. WiFi worked well. The washing machine and dryer can be paid by tap on card, which is super handy. Location is pretty ideal. Close enough to CBD but not in the middle of that mess and also close to Fitzroy. Parliament station is less than a 5 mins walk and from there you have great transport to most places.

And the cherry on top of it all is the staff - especially Ashley but also all the other staff members are lovely and so helpful and supportive and just made the stay 10 times better! So to sum this super long review up - The Mansion has all you could possibly need for even a long-term stay: great atmosphere, chilled and no party hostel, best equipped kitchen, plenty of storage and space.

Would've loved to stay here again for my second time in Melbourne, though unfortunately it is not the cheapest and despite all the big advantages, it's not affordable for me at the moment. But if you can afford it, I can tell you it's definitely the best hostel you'll find in Melbourne!

Thanks for this great stay to all of the staff! All the...
