I use to stay at the Adina near Central when I had to catch a countrylink train, I was beside myself when they shut it down. My husband use to go to The Great Southern Hotel for lunch when he worked in Sydney years back, so I thought I would give it ago & I wasn't disappointed! This is an extremely great location & dare say even better then the Adina. The room was really excellent room for the price I paid, was easy to get to & the fact you can get food there was a bonus... I was extremely tired by the time I got to the Hotel. The were helpful, polite & kind... the bathroom was so clean & shower spacious, with good hot water. The telly was a bit limited, but at least it was there. The bed (I got a twin single room) ... was the most comfortable I've ever had staying in a hotel. The room was well set put, very clean & didn't feel poky, it was a very good size. I really enjoyed my one night there & it was basically just across the road & I was able to catch the Explorer train so easy. I was able to get a good meal down stairs & while waiting for it have a drink from the bar... no alcohol is allowed in the rooms, but was able to take my meal to my room to have privately... but really I realised while waiting for it, that I would have felt very comfortable eating it down stairs in the restaurant. The hotel has so much history & has a little display with photos ect... of its past, the antiques were beautiful. It would have been nice to have had some bottled water in the bar fridge. But I have to say... this will now be my go to new place to stay when in Sydney. You can really see why their rating is so high. It really is that good & I highly recommend it! Thankyou to The Great Southern Hotel for a wonderful experience & room at such a great price.

I had a wonderful first time visit to this hotel. It was also my first international trip. From arrival, staff and everyone i interacted with were kind and courteous. They let me check in early which was a lifesaver after 22 hours of flying! The room was basic, but very clean. I had a wonderful view of the city from the 8th floor. The bed was comfortable and the shower was great! There are a ton of restaurants and stores in the area, which is helpful. Public transport is right outside the entrance, across the street. I would give 5 stars, but a couple things that dropped it. First, it was quite warm while I was in town, and the A/C could only be changed by 2 degrees or so. Sometimes it felt a tad stuffy. The TV was great, but all the channels are the same, some just HD and others listed as not. Lastly, I opted not to pay for the faster wifi, but even on the basic, it would randomly disconnect. All in all, I would ABSOLUTELY return to this hotel. The value was unmatched!

The location is terrific. Just a few steps away from the tram, trains (Central Station), and buses. It’s also just in front of Market City and near Chinatown so finding good restaurants is not a problem as there are a lot of establishments offering asian cuisines in the vicinity. We can also easily walk towards different Sydney Attractions like QVB, Anzac Memorial, St. Mary’s Cathedral, and Darling Harbour. I would highly suggest that you try to walk to these places so that you can better grasp how these spots are connected to one another. By doing this, I realized how concentrated the Sydney attractions are. In terms of the hotel facilities, the room is very clean & spacious ,and the supplies are sufficient. Despite being an old building, all of its facilities are working and offered a comfortable stay for the whole week. The staffs are also friendly and polite. I would recommend this for anyone planning to visit Sydney.

I needed a hotel close to Central Station for a charity walk. My wife found this one and it was so conveniently located. I usually stay in pubs when I travel, so this was a step up in terms of stars...I mean, it had an ensuite! probably the best thing in the room was the desk below the TV. I like to do a bit of work before bed time. There is a restaurant, but i chose some Thai a few doors up and brought it back to my room. The reception staff were friendly, they kept my luggage for most of the day I checked out and I was in and out to collect in minutes at the end of my walk. I'm posting a photo of the cool, old-style lobby and a photo from my room window...which is just for a bit of fun, as I'm sure if I had paid more, I could have got a view...which would have been wasted on me anyway. No complaints here. Clean room, with an ensuite...a TV, clean sheets and a good night's sleep

Although I knew of this hotel, I had never stayed here. That changed a few weeks ago when our usual "go to" hotel in the city became greedy and wanted over $1000 for two nights. Too steep for a basic 3 star hotel, that doesn't even have a pool! Anyway back to The Great Southern, location is excellent virtually a 2 minute walk from Central Railway Station. Light Rail stop right outside the door as well. The rooms are comfortable, though a little small, but you're only in there to sleep. Bathroom was bright and quite roomy compared to some other hotels. Then to top it off we got two nights here, for the price of one night at our usual greedy 3 star! Added bonus of staying in a little museum. Can also recommend the breakfast special in the restaurant, very nice. We also dined in the restaurant for dinner Friday night, food was very good too, order in the bar. Will stay here again!

Great location in a busy area, conveniently accessible to Darling Harbour. The tram stop is right at the doorstep, just opposite the main entrance of the hotel. This tram can take you to almost anywhere you want to go. Additionally, a short walk will lead you to the Central Station, which offers excellent connectivity to various destinations in Sydney. The rooms are well-equipped with all the necessary facilities and maintained in a clean and tidy manner. The ground floor pub is a vibrant hub that offers a unique experience with a mini casino featuring poker machines. It is also a bustling restaurant known for its value menu and generous portions of delicious food. It's definitely a must-visit destination for both hotel guests and locals alike.
