Emperor Franz I (Franz I. von Österreich) was a significant historical figure and the founding ruler of the Austrian Empire. Born in 1768, he became Emperor of Austria in 1804 after the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire. He ruled until his death in 1835 and was known for his efforts to strengthen the Austrian state and its influence in Europe.

Franz I was also the last Holy Roman Emperor, reigning from 1792 until the empire’s collapse in 1806 during the Napoleonic Wars. Afterward, he focused on creating the new Austrian Empire, which consolidated power under the Habsburg monarchy.

In addition to his political work, Emperor Franz I was a patron of the arts and culture, with his reign marking a period of architectural development and patronage. He supported numerous building projects, including the construction of grand palaces, monuments, and institutions, some of which are still prominent in Vienna today.

The monument to Emperor Franz I, located near the Hofburg Palace, is a symbol of his legacy. The statue, designed by Antonio Canova, portrays him in a regal pose, emphasizing his importance in Austrian history. If you’re exploring Vienna, this monument is an important reminder of the ruler who helped shape the modern...

There is an impressive monument in the small courtyard at the Hapsburg Palace that is worth viewing when passing through the palace grounds between Michaelerplatz and Heldenplatz

This is a large scale monument and the works of Italian sculptor Pompeo Marchesi in 1846. Here you find Francis II, the last Holy Roman Emperor whose reign lasted from 1792 to 1806, standing in robe with sceptre in his left hand. His right hand is pointing to the right as if he is addressing a crowd in that direction.

The monument is standing upon a pedestal covered with bas reliefs. There are also four different bronze figures depicting moral virtues of religion, peace, justice and strength that surround the Kaiser Franz statue.

This is a nice monument to see for those who enjoy this type of sightseeing during...
