Čekrekči Muslihudin’s Mosque, also known as Čekrekčinica or Čekrekčijina Mosque, is located right in the heart of Sarajevo’s old merchant center, at the base of a hill which comprises the neighborhood, Kovači.
The mosque was built by Muslihudin Hajji Mustafa on prime land which he had donated to a vakuf (endowment). Hajji Mustafa was given the nickname, “Čekrekčija”, because he produced čekrke (pulleys and winches).
Čekrekčinica was built in 1526 and is the oldest cupolated mosque in Sarajevo.
This type of cupola construction, which appears to be quite shallow, was categorized by the historian, Hamdija Kreševljaković, as a type that was to be found in Mimar Hajrudin’s architectural repertoire.
The original vakufnama (deed of endowment) about the mosque’s construction dates from August 1526. This document is also the oldest original deed written in Sarajevo.
It’s interesting to point out that Čekrekči Mosque is one of only twelve mosques in Sarajevo that went undamaged when Eugene of Savoy sacked the city, and none of the fires that would occur quite often in Sarajevo in centuries past caused damage to it.
This mosque is surrounded on three sides by shops and the entire Čekrekči Muslihudin’s Mosque Complex was made a National Monument of Bosnia and...
