This chronological and thematic exhibition begins with a presentation of the events preceding the Berlin Congress when Austria-Hungary was given a mandate to administer Bosnia and Herzegovina, and concludes with World War I and the part played in it by the First Bosnian Regiment. The themes of the exhibition are: 1. Resistance to the occupation; 2. The new administration; 3. Lifestyle; 4. Cultural, religious and educational societies, printing presses and publishing; 5. Industry and architecture; 6. The annexation and the Bosnian Assembly; 7. The assassination of the heir presumptive, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and his wife Sophie; 8. World War I. The exhibition also includes life-size models of Franz Ferdinand and Sophie. The Museum of Sarajevo 1878-1918 is located in the actual building outside which Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Sophie were assassinated. The Austro-Hungarian period in Bosnia and Herzegovina saw the introduction of a new, modern system of administration, industrialization, and new road and rail communications. The new architecture brought Bosnia into the family of Central European states, and made Sarajevo a city that kept pace architecturally with...

Disappointing Experience and Poor Staff Conduct

We recently visited this museum in Sarajevo and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. After paying the entry fee, we entered what turned out to be a single-room exhibit. In the center of the room, a VR setup was available, with no clear signage or staff explaining that it required an additional fee. My daughter sat down next to another child who was already watching, and they began the experience together.

Within minutes, a woman approached us and very rudely demanded we pay extra for the VR. She spoke harshly to my daughter, who was visibly upset and felt she had done something wrong—when in fact, there was nothing to indicate the VR was not included in the ticket. What made matters worse was that the other child and their family, who were also using the VR without having paid, were not spoken to at all.

This lack of clarity and the inconsistent, frankly inappropriate, treatment from staff made the entire visit feel like a waste of time and money. It’s a shame, as we were genuinely interested in learning more from the exhibit, but the unwelcoming atmosphere and poor organization left a very...

This is a single small room museum primarily dealing with the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand which occurred on the street outside. It's not my top museum in the old town, but worth a brief visit, 30 mins, if interested to learn more about the lead up to the assassination. A short video recreates the drama and there are exhibits which show the conspirators, the route taken by the Archduke and position of the assassins and the same gun (but not the actual gun) used to shoot the Archduke and his wife. Sadly, his wife who also died in the shooting was pregnant at the time.

Nice little one-room museum dedicated to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, Duchess von Hohenberg, by Gavrilo Princip, which started the WW1. Historical objects are preserved there like Princip's clothing, shooting guns, police clothing.. Payments possible only by cash in BAM. There are exchange shops around where you can exchange euros (not possible by card), but they exchange small amounts too, like almost 10 BAM (5 EUR). One ticket to the museum is 5 BAM.

The Sarajevo Museum 1878–1918 offers a powerful glimpse into the city’s turbulent Austro-Hungarian period, including the 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand that sparked World War I. Located at the historic Latin Bridge, the museum combines artifacts, photos, and multimedia displays to vividly recount Sarajevo’s role in global history. Though small, it’s rich in detail and emotion, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in European or Balkan history.
