Museo Naval Austral — Attraction in Punta Arenas

Like many other public institutions in Chile, it seems, this museum is erratic and not always open when it claims to be.

We walked past it this morning and the front door was open, the lights on, situation normal. As it was only 30 minutes to lunchtime closing, however, we decided to come back in the afternoon when it would reopen. When it we did so, it was firmly closed (with no reason given), despite the posted open hours. As we are leaving Punta Arenas tomorrow morning, we will not now be able to visit this museum at all.

Quite a cool little museum, gave us some great insights into Chile, the history with the Navy, plus all the exploits of Magellan as he chatted his courses around the coast. We weren't taught a lot of his journey, so found it quite fascinating.

Nothing is in English so we had to use a translator app, but that's fine. Was still easy to follow and interesting to read.

Glad we stopped in. Definitely know a lot more about the region now and the history...

Was worth the 2000CLP. 1st floor also lot of translations to english. Unfortunately nothing translated on 2nd floor: about Hernando Magellanes and Shackleton. Would be fantastic if somebody just takes 1 day to translate the information
