If you are a movie fan and living in hong kong, you would certainly love Cinematheque in Yaumatei, Kowloon (百老滙电影中心), or you probably already joined as member in order to enjoy movie ticket discount, accumulating points for free or discount tickets and other membership perks.
Apart from its convenient access location (about 15-20 minutes walk from MTR Yaumatei station), Cinematheque often screens films or non mainstream which you may not readily find from other more business or profit oriented movie theatres in hong kong, including those unusual speciality, minority, niche, cult or not aimed for mass market, low budget films.
More often than not, it is the only one cinema in town showing some of those film titles or particular themes for artistic values or for viewers who have exquisite taste, knowing how to appreciate and enjoy seeing those films by directors or actors not yet rose to fame but very promising great artist in the future. From time to time, Cinematheque also screens movies made in older days, for movie fans who were nostalgic of good old days or for remembrance of famed movie directors or actors, or simply because the films were masterpiece.
In fact, to broaden movie goers perspectives, appreciation and love of films, arts and culture, Cinematheque organised lots of activities all year round such as thematic movie programmes, film festivals based on individual countries and international film festival, also film related seminars, meet director sessions...I admire very much the cinema has been doing for movie fans. It also seems very likely to meet movie directors and actors/actresses in this cinema when they come up to the film screening (either before or after the show) to express gratitude, exchange opinions or just to greet their fans. I have met two japanese directors (hirokazu koreeda 是枝裕和,and probably naomu kawase), and at least one hong kong director here. With my lousy japanese language standard, i was a bit surprised i understood by and large what was said by koreeda san!
Lastly don't forget to buy something to drink and eat at the food counter to enjoy concurrently the good movie. I like their coffee, black and cuppuccino and spicy fish xiaomai 燒賣 (sometimes sold out or replaced with...
Read moreThis was one of my favorite experiences in Hong Kong. I solo visited when it was super hot outside, so I thought a movie would be a great way to spend the hottest part of the day. I had lunch inside the magical connected bookstore- I ordered a salad and a glass of wine and it was perfect. I went and saw the movie (a British coming-of-age film called How to Have Sex) and then continued to explore the bookstore! They have such a great selection of books, gifts, souvenirs, and art. I put a coin into a vending machine and ended up with one of my favorite souvenirs of the trip- a little book of illustrations by an artist. I was so enchanted by the whole place! Loved it. Would love...
Read moreEco friendly and multifunctional cinema with a bookstore, eco friendly shop (great products from So Soap, HK organic cashew brittle, nice selection of fountain pens) and cinema with local snacks (siu mai) and music shop with funky posters. Like the washroom-clean and with plants grown in reused glass jars. This cinema shows artsy movies unlike the bestsellers in others in Hong Kong. Screen and sound system etc are on par with other Broadway cinemas. Beware that there is petty theft in the washroom- watch your belongings. There's a notice in Chinese by the...
