A lot of interesting displays. Two complaints: 1) actual historical documents are on display and fading badly; it's sad to see pieces of history deteriorating quickly in a museum. Couldn't they have taken some measures to preserve the documents? 2) The display needs updating. The Vietnamese riots of the 60's are covered but nothing since.

This is a small speciality museum for those with an interest in local correctional services and prison history in Hong Kong. It is located along Tung Tau Wan Road in Stanley, suitably near the Stanley Prison grounds. Opening hours are 10-1pm & 2-5pm daily (closed on Mondays) and is free to visit. The Museum features 10 small galleries spaced out over two floors. Exhibitions represent over 170 years of history dating from the late Qing Dynasty through the colonial period all the way to the present era of National Security Law. The rooms are curated with photos and images from the past, various artefacts and information related to dealing with pirates in the early days, to prison internments during the Japanese occupation, the Vietnamese refugee situation as well as general prison life at the old Victoria prison. There are mock gallows and prison cells as well. Overall, the museum isn't bad if you are in Stanley and have interest. However, for tourists, with Tai Kwan having opened up in Central over the past few years, a fair amount of what you see here is redundant to the various exhibitions available. If you are limited in time, you'll do fine enough visiting there instead.

A fairly small museum. No cost to visit. Interesting history of the Hong Kong correctional system and its transformation from a highly punitive system to modern service focused on offender rehabilitation.
