Guatapé is a tourist municipality of the Andes in northwest Colombia and east of Medellín. It is famous for its houses decorated with colorful bas-reliefs. It is located near the artificial reservoir of Peñol-Guatapé, a very busy water sports center. The Piedra del Peñol is a giant granite rock that is located to the southwest of the town and has a long staircase to its top, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the area. The stone of El Marial is a giant overhanging rock that is nearby.

Before arriving the Iberian conquerors, this territory was inhabited by aboriginal ethnic groups, some commanded by a remembered cacique named Guatape. In his honor, the town was baptized in this way.
Another name that the town has had in the past is «La Ceja de Guatapé».
In 1714, the natives of "Guatapé" of this region were grouped in a shelter known as San Antonio de Remolinos de El Peñol. Read moreBeautiful little lakeside town perfect for a few days of relaxation. Its got a very attractive main square with a beautiful white church that holds the main focus. In the centre is a large fountain that is lit up at night which is the perfect centrepiece of the square with different food stalls around the inner edge with cafes, restaurants & a few hotels around the outside. The cafes & restaurants provide the perfect way to spend time eating, having a drink & to watch the world go by. Away from the main square are equally attractive gaily painted buildings containing small & more local cafes & shops selling food, drinks, trinkets, bags, souvenirs etc. The man made lake provides various water activities such as boat rides, water skiing & a big zip line over the lake. The big rock nearby is the main tourist attraction & is worth a couple of hours to visit it. However lunchtime queues at the ticket booth & steps can be lengthy. This is the destination for Medellin & Bogotas middle classes for weekends & public holidays & is a genteel holiday resort.
