A Historical and Spiritual Journey: The Church of St. Simeon We're excited to share a brief glimpse into the rich history of the Church of St. Simeon. This architectural gem in Zadar, Croatia, is not just a building; it's a testament to centuries of faith, art, and history. Originally built as the early Christian Basilica of St. Stephen the Protomartyr in the 5th century, the church was once one of the largest late-antique basilicas in all of Dalmatia. Over the centuries, it underwent numerous transformations, with its most significant renovation taking place in 1632 when the sanctuary was added and the church was rededicated to St. Simeon. This rededication followed the ceremonial transfer of the reliquary containing the body of St. Simeon, which had been in Zadar since the 13th century. Today, the church stands as a beautiful blend of its early Christian origins and later Baroque additions, offering visitors a unique journey through time. Its most striking feature is the magnificent silver and gold reliquary of St. Simeon, held aloft by two bronze angels cast from captured Turkish cannons. Just, advice, be careful about clothes and entrance at the church

Very nice church in the old town. Initially this church was an Early Christian three-nave basilica, then a Gothic building, and later a monument of Baroque characteristics. On its main Altar there is a silver casket with the relics of St Simeon, dating back to 1380. The Casket of St Simeon is considered to be the most valuable work of Medieval goldsmith art in Croatia, which was ordered by the Hungaro-Croatian Queen Elizabeth for the relics of St Simeon. It was made by the goldsmith Franciscus de Mediolano (of Milan), who was living in Zadar at the time, and in the south of the Church of St Simeon there is a Roman column that was put there from the Forum in 1729, and which is made of two preserved columns from the city temple on the Capitolium.
