The Greeting to the Sun — Attraction in Grad Zadar

"The Greeting to the Sun" (Pozdrav Suncu) is a monumental public art installation located on the waterfront of Zadar, Croatia. Designed by Croatian architect Nikola Bašić and completed in 2008, it is situated on the city's westernmost point, near the famous Sea Organ, another of Bašić's creations. This striking circular installation measures 22 meters in diameter and is embedded into the pavement.

The structure is composed of 300 multi-layered glass plates arranged to form a large disc. Beneath these glass plates lie photovoltaic solar modules, which absorb sunlight during the day. As night falls, the stored solar energy powers a vibrant, dynamic light show. LED lights embedded within the installation produce an array of colors and patterns that mimic the solar system's movements, creating a mesmerizing visual experience for onlookers. The lights are synchronized with the rhythm of the waves and the sounds of the Sea Organ, offering an immersive sensory experience that connects the natural and the technological.

Visiting the Greeting to the Sun was one of the highlights of my trip to Zadar. This stunning installation, located right by the sea next to the famous Sea Organ, is an incredible blend of art, science, and nature. During the day, the large circular platform quietly absorbs sunlight, but as soon as the sun sets, it lights up with vibrant, colorful patterns powered by solar energy. It feels like the ground itself is alive with energy!

What I loved most was how the installation connects you to the cosmos — with a solar calendar engraved on the ring and smaller discs representing the planets nearby. It’s not just beautiful but also educational. The nearby Sea Organ adds a magical soundtrack as the waves create peaceful, melodic sounds, making the whole experience truly multi-sensory.

The location is perfect for an evening stroll along the waterfront, watching the sunset while enjoying this unique light show. Best of all, it’s completely free and open at all times.
