Ceremonial entrance gate to the Prague Castle from the 1st to the 2nd courtyard was, according to the Latin inscription, probably completed in 1614 under the reign of Emperor Matthias I. Hence it´s name. At present, it is considered as an artwork of architect Giovanni Maria Filippi. It originally stood loose and had the character of a triumphal arc, but in the years 1763-71 it was surrounded by buildings of a court of honor. From the gate the Pacassi´s staircase rises to the right leading to today's halls, the most important of ´em are the Throne, Brožík´s, Mirror, Music and Community Hall. The staircase to the left of the gate takes you through the Column hall with Rothmayer Hall to the large halls of the North Wing of Prague´s Castle.

Z brány stoupá vpravo Pacassiho schodiště, které vede do dnešních reprezentačních sálů, k nejvýznamnějším patří Trůnní, Brožíkův, Zrcadlový, Hudební a Společenský sál. Vlevo z brány vychází sloupová síň s Rothmayerovým sálem do velkých sálů...

Beautiful place, on the upper and western sides of the magnificent Prague Castle. Instead, there is a ceremony to replace the Republican guard of the fortress. In the square in front of him there are street performances by various musicians and artists, and residents in traditional garb offer travelers to wear royal clothes and photograph with them in different variations. Very nice. Beyond the wall on the side of the hunt is a breathtaking view of the city of Prague. Do not stop...

Matthias Gate (1614) stands as the ceremonial entrance to Prague Castle’s first courtyard. Designed by Giovanni Maria Filippi, it was commissioned by Rudolf II and finished under his brother Matthias I, marking the first Baroque structure in Bohemia. Conceived as a free-standing triumphal arch linking the first and second courtyards, it redefined the approach to the castle. The pylons and wrought lattice set the stage for processions, while the later addition of the “Fighting Giants” statues turned the gateway into theatre — Baroque power expressed through bodies locked in struggle. The hourly changing of the guard adds a modern ritual to this...

The Matthias Gate (Matyášova brána) is the grand entrance to Prague Castle. It is a stunning Baroque gateway marking the main entrance to Prague Castle’s first courtyard. Don’t miss the ceremonial Changing of the Guard here daily at noon, a spectacle of precision and tradition. I think it's better to enter the complex through this side, as opposed to entering via eastern entrance. This way, you will avoid a huge stair climb.

The gate itself is beautiful, also, the change of guards is amazing. The drawback is that you can wait a lot to see it happen, so it is far better that you adjust your schedule to be there 10-15 minutes before the ceremony. The other problem is the crowd, lots of people are there just to watch it so you may end up seeing it from behind
