Copenhagen City Hall is a magnificent architectural landmark and a must-visit for anyone interested in history, design, or civic culture. Situated right in the heart of the city, this imposing building stands as a proud symbol of Danish municipal heritage and architectural grandeur.
The City Hall is designed in the National Romantic style, heavily influenced by the Italian Renaissance but also rooted in Nordic tradition. Completed in 1905 by architect Martin Nyrop, the building features a distinctive red-brick façade, arched windows, golden accents, and a beautiful gilded statue of Absalon — the legendary founder of Copenhagen — above the main entrance.
One of the most impressive features is the tower, soaring 105 meters high — one of the tallest in Copenhagen — and offering sweeping views of the city (when open to visitors). The intricate details of the interior are equally stunning, especially the grand atrium with its arched colonnades, marble floors, and Danish coats of arms.
Visitors can also admire the famous Jens Olsen’s World Clock, a marvel of mechanical engineering and astronomical precision that draws enthusiasts from around the world.
Even if you don't take a tour, the exterior alone is well worth admiring. The building fits beautifully into the historic cityscape, standing proudly on Rådhuspladsen (City Hall Square), where locals gather for public celebrations, events, and even...
Read moreNice place to visit. We were here to get married. Couples can note that synthetic flowers are available on rent here for 50-200 dkk which we made use of for our photoshoot session. We recommend Bobby of Ignited Visuals for this. The experience was amazing. Every couple should have a photo session on the day itself in my opinion, it adds to the memories.
The building itself is very well maintained and in certain parts, adorned with colorful murals. It has got this old world charm and the main hall in the middle is where you'd always spot couples gathering waiting for their turn to get married. If you're here for the same, enter from the city hall square doors which open automatically and follow the hearts to the benches where you wait to be called.
If you need to present documents, it's on the left of the main entrance door immediately after entering the building, in the...

The current building was inaugurated in 1905. It was designed by the architect Martin Nyrop in the National Romantic style but with inspiration from the Siena City Hall. Its richly ornamented front dominates it, the gilded statue of Absalon just above the balcony and the tall, slim clock tower. The latter is, at 105.6 meters, one of the tallest buildings in the generally low city...
