This is a stupendous historical landmark of great significance not only in Beaune but of France. Founded in the mid fourteen hundred as a charitable organisation for the poor and the disadvantaged, this Hospices de Beaune was realised. The entrance with its majestic walls are a fantastic introduction to the rest of this gorgeous building. The building inside is a rectangular central courtyard surrounded by the original setting of the hospital. The austere Burgundy glazed terracotta tiles are absolutely magnificent. You are allowed access to almost every rooms in this building except the verandah rooms upstairs as they weren't accessible to the public when I visited. But, I was in for a real treat! I could almost sense the dedicated works of nurses and doctors and everyone involved in this institution all those years ago! I spent an hour and a bit exploring this place. There's wheelchair accessible entrance but just be aware of the uneven surface of the forecourt. There's public lavatory and a gift shop. I walked from Gare de Beaune here and I didn't notice public transportation from the station. This is mindblowingly a must explore and visit historical landmark in Beaune. I'm currently staying in Dijon on holidays and you can easily catch a train to and from Beaune and fairly regular train services. Ten out of ten!

If you are in Beaune, then to visit Hospice de Beaune is a must. It started already 1443 as a resort for poor and sick people. Two things was the real drive to make this hospital so successful. 1) Charity and free work from religious people, for example nuns work. 2) Donation of vineyards from growers in a hope for reward in heaven. In the past, vineyards in Burgundy was just simple agriculture, and nobody could imagine that these tiny plots should once become the most sought after in the world. Today the Hospice own around 60 hectares of premium land in Burgundy, and the economic return from selling grapes and wine is enormous. Is a cheers for this achievement appropriate or not ???

What a unique insight into the medical history of this area. The early commitment (1400s!) of the founders of this hospital for the poor and the nuns that cared for the sick was probably unusual for the time. It's impressive that the modern hospital next door continues the tradition of care while this important slice of history has been preserved. Absolutely worth a visit to understand this early history, but also to see the magnificent altar piece by Roger van der Weyden that was discovered in an attic, cleaned, restored and displayed. The architecture, particularly the unusually tiled roof will also be of interest to many.

This was fun and lots to see inside. I can’t do it justice to try and explain all I saw, in and on the grounds. If you look at the map you’ll see how large it is and the roof tiles are so vivid, it’s breathtaking. It rained that day but started out nice and we enjoyed the outer courtyard while the weather was still with us. Inside, the facility was put back to the days of old and it’s crazy to think of the history and secrets the building holds. The wood carvings and woodwork were beautiful and I’ll never forget. I would make time to go there and enjoy it for yourself.
