The Hofgarten (Court Garden) is a garden in the center of Munich, Germany, located between the Residenz and the Englischer Garten. The garden was built in 1613–1617 by Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria in the style of Italian Renaissance garden. In the center of the garden is a pavilion for the goddess Diana, built-in 1615 by Heinrich Schön the elder. A path leads from each of the eight arches. On the roof of the Diana pavilion, is the replica of a sculpture of Bavaria by Hubert Gerhard, created in 1623. The original is in the Kaisersaal of the Residenz. Facing the Hofgarten on the east side is the Bavarian Staatskanzlei ("State Chancellery"), housed in the former Army Museum, with the addition of glass wings left and right of the original building. The repurposed building was completed in 1993. A few steps more eastwards the Hofgartenkaserne was located from 1801 to 1899. In front of the Staatskanzlei, the Kriegerdenkmal ("war memorial") is located, built for commemoration of the Munich people, killed in action in World War I.

Unter Herzog Maximilian I. wurde ab 1613 die Residenz im nördlichen Teil erweitert und in diesem Rahmen der Hofgarten - außerhalb der damaligen Grabenbefestigung - angelegt. Er war bereits die zweite Gartenanlage an der Residenz nach dem Renaissancegarten von Herzog Albrecht von Bayern, von dem nur Teile eines Arkadengangs erhalten sind. Der Renaissancegarten hatte eine kleinere Ausdehnung und umfasste ein Lusthaus auf dem heutigen nordöstlichen Areal des Gartens. Maximilian I. erweiterte die Anlage nach Westen. 1614 begann der Bau des Dianatempels, der den neuen Mittelpunkt des Gartens darstellen sollte und 1616 fertiggestellt werden konnte. An der West- und Nordseite des Gartens entstanden Arkadengänge, von denen die nördliche 1780/81 von Hofbaumeister Karl Albert von Lespilliez mit der Churfürstlichen Galerie ausgestattet wurde. Die Fresken im westlichen Arkadengang erzählen die Geschichte der Wittelsbacher. 1780 war auch das Jahr, in dem der Hofgarten für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht wurde. Bis 1796 war der niedriger liegende östliche Teil des Gartens eine Wasserfläche. Anschließend an den Hofgarten entstand an der Westseite zwischen 1824 und 1826 das Bazargebäude, das die dort vorher befindliche kurfürstliche Reithalle ersetzte. Die Lusthäuser im östlichen Teil des Gartens wurden Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts entfernt und machten ab 1807 Platz für die Hofgartenkaserne, die wiederum ab 1905 ersetzt wurde durch das Armeemuseum, dessen Zentralbau heute zur Bayerischen Staatskanzlei gehört. Das sternförmig um den Dianatempel angelegte Wegenetz wurde ab 1776 mit einem Baumrahmen umgeben, so wie wir ihn heute wieder kennen. Allerdings hatte sich der Hofgarten zwischenzeitlich bis etwa 1850 zu einem Baumgarten entwickelt, der an manchen Stellen eher wie ein Wald denn einer angelegten Gartenanlage wirkte. Ab 1853 wurde der Garten umgestaltet von Carl Effner senior zu einem Schmuckgarten mit Anlage von streng gegliederten Pflanzbeeten. Im 2. Weltkrieg wurde der Garten stark zerstört, seine Neuanlage begann 1950. In diese Zeit fällt auch die Anlage von vier Schalenbrunnen an den Kreuzungen mit den Seitenwegen. Die ergänzen den Nymphenbrunnen von Ludwig von Schwanthaler von 1852/53 sowie die in die Wände des Dianatempels eingelassenen Muschelbrunnen. Der Hofgarten hat sich wegen seines feinen Sandbelags zwischen Baumumrandung und Arkaden zum beliebten Platz für Boulespieler entwickelt. Im Jahr 1974 erhielt eine Hand voll Boulespieler die Erlaubnis, ihrem Hobby im Hofgarten nachzugehen. Seit 1983 wird hier das Münchner Hofgartenturnier im Boule abgehalten.

Hofgarten is the court garden just north of Residenz and one of the much needed green spaces in the city of Munich. It was built in the early 17th century. Here you will find a nicely laid out and manicured garden with an interesting centre pavilion called Diana Temple. There are small fountains linked to the temple by walkways. You'll find tree lined walkways and plenty of park benches if you want to stop and take a rest during your visit to the garden. Hofgarten is surrounded by nice buildings that serve as museums, galleries and shops. It is also linked to the much larger and rural English Gardens further northeast. In the end, we liked our short visit to Hofgarten. It makes for a fair place to take a seat and rest your feet after a few hours visiting Residenz just to the south of the garden.

Beautiful place especially during the spring and summer time because of colorful flowers that you can find in the gardens. There is a path leading to the English Garden. I recommend take the route from Odeon Platz through hofgarten till Englischgarten. you will enter and witness the paintings on the wall related to Bavaria's history. Built between 1613-1617 and renovated after ww2 , you will pass through a very crowded place with mostly people playing the game of throwing a steel ball. you will see also a long hall of high class shops and art galleries. in the middle you will pass through Diana's temple where a lot of musicians plays so you will walk with music. at the end you will see the new Bavaria's parliament building and the war memorial.
