Had an absolutely magical 5 days in middle of July (8-13) 2019 at the mosaic art school. Luciana and her colleagues were amazing!! A well organized class making the most of the short time to make two mosaics. The primary project was to reproduce at a practical scale, part of an existing mosaic from Ravenna using traditional Byzantine techniques. The second is a day project to learn a simpler direct mosaic technique. The best part however was working together with the teachers and four other students who had travelled from different parts of the world to take time off their regular lives to spend 5 days pursuing their passion for mosaics in Ravenna. During the day we were completely immersed in our projects with wonderful support from each other and the teachers. Then in the evenings we would get together, eat, talk, discover what brought us together and enjoy the wonderful town...
Read moreI highly recommend any of the workshops offered by Luciana Notturni at her school in lovely Ravenna. You’re provided an opportunity to learn both the context of the art of mosaic, when and by whom these ancient techniques were developed and where the art of mosaic fits in as an important medium historically and today, and you learn the traditions of the mosaicist and techniques she uses to create art anew or copy some of the ancient designs. Ravenna is the mosaic capital of the world.
In my five-day course, held 9AM - 4PM, I learned new skills and met other students from Dominican Republic, Belgium, West Bank, London, and Edinburgh! We had a ball!

I was fortunate to book a 1:1 class with her last-minute with little notice. I had fallen in love with mosaics only a few weeks earlier, after seeing the Palatine chapel in Palermo and then to Pompeii and missed all the group classes before I left Italy.
She and her team were extremely talented, knowledgeable and accomodating. I felt a new part of creativity within me had been unlocked and I had an experience which I will take away for the...
