When in Rome do not miss to go on the Aventine Hill! You will be enchanted by the amazing panoramic views and the beautiful parks located there. The Aventine Hill is one of the seven hills on which Ancient Rome was built. We all know that St Peter's Dome is visible almost from everywhere due to its big dimension, here you also have the chance to look at the famous Dome directly from a Key Hole. Looking through the hole, you will be able to see the Cupola surrounded by trees and flowers too. How is it possible? Well, the Key Hole is in the door of thr 'secret garden': the gardens of the Priorato di Malta. Overall, its a good place where you find silence and enjoy the one of the views of Rome away from the noise of the...

This was on my list too do while in Rome. We took the bus which dropped us off at the bottom of the hill, we walked up with other tourists. There are no signs to this peephole. You go past the church down the road, and across from what looks like a school is a large green door with a peephole. There is normally a line as some tour companies go to this place. You need a camera with a good zoom in order to get the picture, a cell phone camera will not work. I have a Samsung camera which worked...

The secret that isn’t so much a secret perhaps any more - but it doesn’t make it any less fascinating! 🗝The keyhole is part of the property owned by the Priory of the Knights of Malta, a Roman Catholic religious order of crusader knights that originated in Jerusalem in the 11th century. It is the oldest surviving chivalric order in the world and is a sovereign entity under international law. The estate also hosts the embassy of the Order of Malta to Italy. 🏰The fortified residence originally belonged to Alberic II, a nobleman who ruled Rome from 932 to 954, and later became a Benedictine monastery in the 10th century. With its strategic location on Aventine Hill and advantageous view over the Tiber River, it was a natural choice for the seat of the Knights Templars when they came to power in the Middle Ages. ⚔️When the order was defeated in the 14th century, the property was passed on to the Knights Hospitallers, the predecessors of the current order now referred to as the Knights of Malta. ⚓️The property lies in the piazza Cavalieri di Malta, designed by Giovan Battista Piranesi in 1765. According to Roman legend, Aventine Hill was imagined as a sacred ship that would eventually set sail for the heavens, so Piranesi incorporated many nautical elements and symbols into his designs. The ornamental door symbolized the entrance to the ship deck while the manicured gardens within were the ropes and rig of the ship. 🌳 The gardens can be viewed by appointment only. @travelbymitra —————————————- #rometravel #rometrip #rometravelers #virtuosotraveladvisor #secretrome
