The Colossus of Constantine was a monumental statue of the Emperor Constantine the Great, originally erected in the early 4th century AD in the Basilica of Maxentius in the Roman Forum. Although the original statue stood an estimated 12 meters (nearly 40 feet) tall and was made using a combination of marble and a wooden core with gilded bronze, only fragments have survived. Today, some of these colossal remnants—including a massive head, hand, and foot—are displayed in the courtyard of the Palazzo dei Conservatori, part of the museum, on the Capitoline Hill. The sheer scale of the surviving fragments is a powerful reminder of Constantine’s role in reshaping the Roman Empire and legitimising Christianity. The Cafarelli gardens, where the replica stands, is free to enter and is around the back of the museum. There are some helpful informatiin boards which give details on the construction of the replica and also on the discovery of the original, which given its age, is quite recent. Opposite the gardens is a viewpoint from which you can see over the Marcellus theatre to the Janiculum hill, and the monument to Victor Emmanuele in the other direction. Well worth a visit if you're...

Located in the garden of Villa Caffarelli at the Capitoline Museums, you can admire the evocative reconstruction of the Colossus of Constantine, one of the most representative works of late ancient Roman sculpture, created on a 1:1 scale, thanks to the in-depth study of literary and epigraphic sources and of the nine original fragments preserved in the courtyard of Palazzo dei Conservatori. About 13 meters high, the colossal statue of Constantine (4th century AD) depicts the emperor in the guise of a seated Jupiter, a cloak on his shoulder, the globe in his left hand and the scepter in his right. As soon as you enter the entrance to the gardens of Villa Caffarelli, you are amazed by the size and beauty of this colossal statue, and your thoughts go back in time and imagine the beauty and grandeur of...
