The Basilica of St Mary of the Altar of Heaven. Romanesque, 12th century. In Roman times, it was the site of the "temple of Juno Moneta—after whom Money is named. According to Roman historians, in the fourth century B.C., the irritated honking of the sacred geese around Juno's temple on Capitoline Hill warned the people of an impending night attack by the Gauls, who were secretly scaling the walls of the citadel. From this event, the goddess acquired [the] surname-Juno Moneta, from Latin monere (to warn) . . . Santa Maria in Ara Coeli, perched on top of the Capitoline Hill in Rome, is a beautiful church with a rich and layered history. Originally built on the site of an ancient Roman temple, legend suggests that it was here the Emperor Augustus experienced a vision of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child, leading to the church's name—Ara Coeli meaning “Altar of Heaven.” The church, dating primarily from the 13th century, features a reasonably plain brick facade that contrasts with its opulent interior, filled with frescoes, marble columns, and gilded ceilings. One of its most important relics is the Santo Bambino of Aracoeli, a wooden statue of the infant Jesus believed to have miraculous healing powers, especially during the Christmas season. The church apparently also famously hosted state ceremonies of the Roman Republic. It's a wonderful church for a quick visit, and so much going on in that area generally. If you don't fancy the climb up the stairs from the front then there is a side entrance with slightly fewer stairs, go past the bronze replica of Marcus Auralius on his horse and keep left, up the stairs...
