I saw Verdi's La Traviata there last weekend. It was a stripped down version of the opera, with just 3 musicians and 3 singers in a 2-hour production with 2 10-minute intermissions. It was thus a minimalist production and interpretation. I saw a minimalist production of Carmen at the Met about 40 years ago (time?). Both worked. This production of La Traviata was very special because it was so intimate. There were only a few rows of seating, so there were times when the singers were just a meter or two away. The other great feature was that the 3 acts of the opera were each performed in a different room of the Palazzo, with the production and the audience moving on the intermission. The attached pictures show the set of the second and third acts. In short, the opera, with its beautiful and iconic music, was innovative, intimate, and a lot of fun. A great 2-hour interlude in the fabulous city of Venice--an indelible experience. I highly...
