like all the ports in the Cinque Terre towns, the harbor is very small. finding the spot where you can buy tickets and board the boat is not obvious . the time schedule changes frequently during the year fewer departure times in the spring and more in the summer. another issue is weather. the boat service will not run when the sea is too choppy, but there is no easy way to find out beforehand. the trip itself goes between Levanto in the north to Portovenere. most tourists just use it between the five official Cinque Terre towns. just to see the view from the sea. it can get crowded just like the trains that run through the area, so pack...

Best of the five towns without a doubt! Of course that also means it's the most popular so it is jammed in peak season. Even in late September it's very full and getting on and off the regional train can be quite a challenge if you have bags and are over 50! We stayed in a wonderful vacation rental on the third floor directly over the square. It couldn't have been better. Bedroom full kitchen living room bathroom and view to die for. We could enjoy the square then walk upstairs open the window and look down and continue to enjoy it. The place was immaculate, recently remodeled and we would go back for sure! We could stay...

Nice pier, right in front of riomaggiore which is a beautiful little village. The waves can be very strong so be super careful, especially when you go along the pier in the village! when I was there, some freak waves came over the pier and soaked people, then a massive one came along and swept people off their feet injuring them and throwing them into the water, an ambulance came and one man was hospitalised as a result and many other lost valuable possessions. They quickly closed the pier after, if you decide to walk out on it then keep close to the wall and you won't be swept off your feet when a freak wave comes crashing down.

We took the train from La Spezia where our hotel is to Vernazza. The train was clean and the easiest way to get from La Spezia to Cinque Terre. It was raining when we were there so the ferry wasn't an option with the choppy water. Vernazza is beautiful. I think it's my favorite of Cinque Terre. From the train station down to the harbor was a short walk with lots of touristy shops, restaurants, and gelato shops. The buildings are so colorful. Walk down to the harbor to look back at Vernazza to see all the colorful buildings lined up next to each other. It's a gorgeous sight.
