The Monterosso Vernazza Panoramic Trail offers breathtaking views of the Italian coastline, but unfortunately, it falls short in several aspects. While the trail presents natural beauty, there are some significant issues that need to be addressed for a safer and more enjoyable experience.

One of the main concerns is the poor maintenance of the trail. The lack of upkeep is evident, with sections of the path showing signs of neglect. Overgrown vegetation and uneven surfaces can make the trek challenging and potentially hazardous for visitors. A more consistent and attentive maintenance plan should be implemented to ensure the safety of hikers.

Furthermore, access to the trail is allowed without proper checks for appropriate equipment. It is crucial to enforce regulations and recommend suitable gear, such as hiking boots and water supplies, to all visitors. By doing so, the authorities can promote a culture of safety and preparedness among hikers.

Another issue lies in the presence of unprotected dangerous spots along the trail. These areas should be identified and appropriately secured with barriers or guardrails to prevent accidents. Safety measures like these are crucial, especially considering the narrow width of the path. At times, hikers need to pause to allow others to pass by, leading to unnecessary delays and congestion. Implementing a one-way alternating system could effectively alleviate these waiting times and enhance the flow of foot traffic.

The pricing of the trail is also a point of contention. Given the current cost, the expectations for maintenance and safety precautions are high. Visitors rightly demand impeccable maintenance and adequate protection for dangerous areas when paying a premium. Alternatively, some argue that the trail should be free of charge, as this would encourage more people to experience its beauty without financial barriers.

Additionally, the signage along the trail is insufficient and often unclear. Clear and comprehensive signposting is essential for visitors to navigate the path with ease and confidence. By improving the signage, hikers can enjoy a more seamless experience and avoid potential detours or confusion.

In conclusion, while the Monterosso Vernazza Panoramic Trail offers stunning views, it is marred by various shortcomings. The trail suffers from poor maintenance, lacks proper safety measures, experiences congestion, and falls short in terms of signage. It is imperative that the authorities address these issues promptly. By implementing a robust maintenance plan, enhancing safety measures, improving signage, and considering a one-way alternating system, the trail can provide a safer and more enjoyable experience for...

The trail from Vernazza to Monterosso al Mare is a medium-level difficulty hike, but it’s important to know what you’re getting into. This is not a leisurely walk—it’s a proper hiking path, so be prepared for a good workout. The trail takes about two hours at a relaxed pace, covering a distance of approximately 4 kilometers. While it may seem short, it involves continuous ups and downs, with steep stairs and rocky paths that can be challenging, especially under the heat of the sun. It’s essential to wear proper clothing and footwear, bring enough water, and avoid hiking during the hottest hours of the day, as there are no refreshment points along the way.

I highly recommend starting from Vernazza towards Monterosso, as the steep climb at the beginning from Monterosso can be quite exhausting. The route is well-marked, so it’s easy to follow, and the views are absolutely breathtaking, with the Mediterranean Sea as a stunning backdrop. If you’re an active person who enjoys hiking and scenic landscapes, this trail is perfect for you. However, if you’re not accustomed to physical activity, you might find it exhausting and less enjoyable.

The trail is accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels, but it requires a certain level of effort due to the steep inclines. The entrance fee is included in the 2-3 day train ticket. I recommend starting early in the morning, as the midday heat can make the hike quite challenging. The views, especially when you reach Vernazza, are absolutely worth the effort. Definitely a 100%...

Among the most gorgeous trails in the world. And a bit tough and tricky in spots. Lots of stairs -- especially at the beginning. Views so beautiful they'll make you cry.

With a dog, two kids (age 5 and 7), and a 73-year old grandma (all from Colorado) it took us 3.5 HOURS. Everyone did fine, though it made the 5-year-old and the 73-year-old quite tired.

There was some water for the pup to get in to cool off. We left Monterosso at 5:30PM in July to avoid the heat and I would recommend it. Cooler and very few crowds in the evening and even our crew made it in to Vernazza by dark.

It isn't quite as maintained as most trails in the US, from our hotel earlier in the day we saw a German tourist fall off the trail after leaning on a rail. So, don't lean on rails and keep an eye on the kiddos -- though our kids did fine with appropriate warnings.

Tips: -- Doing it in the evening worked great. Cooler, few crowds. -- Bring lots of water and snacks (more than you think). -- Bring bug spray in the summer. -- Make dinner reservations in Vernazza for 4 hours after you leave Monterosso so that you have them if you want them. Vernazza is very small and all the restaurants were completely full when we arrived (though we arrived during a festival). -- Check the train schedule as soon as you land in Vernazza so you can plan when you will leave. Trains are only once an hour. Buy tickets ahead of time for everyone in your party (including kids and dogs -- both...
