北岡神社 は1000年以上の歴史をもつ、熊本市内でも有数の由緒正しき神社。京都を懐かしんで「祇園宮」などと読んでいた。今でも祇園橋・祇園祭とその名残がある。実際に北岡神社という名前になったのは、明治時代に入ってから。創建から三度の遷座が行われ、そのたびに、摂社とか末社とかを吸収してして大きくなったんじゃないのか説が急浮上。
