Kenchō-ji, also known as the Temple of the Humble Law, is a Zen Buddhist temple located in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto, Japan. It is one of the five head temples of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism, and one of the most important Zen temples in Kyoto.

Founded in the 13th century by the famous Zen master Eisai, Kenchō-ji has a rich history and is home to many cultural treasures. One of the most famous treasures is the Ogamidō, a small wooden hut where Eisai is said to have practiced and taught Zen. Another important cultural asset of the temple is the Gankō-in, a hall designated as a National Treasure that contains a magnificent statue of the seated Buddha.

The temple's garden is also highly regarded and has been designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty. It features a large pond with several islands, a waterfall, and a collection of cacti and succulents. The garden is designed to reflect the landscape of the surrounding mountains and has been carefully cultivated for centuries.

Visitors to Kenchō-ji can participate in meditation and Zen practice, as well as explore the temple's many cultural treasures. The temple also hosts a number of events and ceremonies throughout the year, including flower festivals and traditional Japanese tea ceremonies.

Overall, Kenchō-ji is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in Zen Buddhism, Japanese culture, or garden design. Its rich history, cultural significance, and serene beauty make it one of the most popular and highly-regarded temples in...

Worth the visit!

I was immobilized by its surroundings and the interior inside. Its less popular than the Toji temple, but I think this temple should receive much more attention. I really enjoyed and find the overall very beautiful.

A ticket is necessary and you have to take off your shoes to enter.

Its location is easy accessible as its just a few min walk from...

This hidden temple was not on our list, but the To-ji temple nearby was selling combination tickets. We’re very glad they did, because this temple is beautiful. The visit is all interior / no shoes, there is a garden and a zen garden, and you can visit traditional tea rooms… very...
