Umekoji Park, situated just west of Kyoto Station, is a spacious urban park that opened in 1995. It offers a tranquil retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle, featuring expansive lawns, seasonal flower gardens, and shaded walkways. The park is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, providing ample space for picnics, leisurely strolls, and recreational activities.

A notable attraction within Umekoji Park is the Kyoto Railway Museum, which opened in 2016. As Japan’s largest railway museum, it showcases an extensive collection of locomotives and carriages, including a 500-series Shinkansen. Visitors can explore interactive exhibits that detail the evolution of Japan’s railway system, making it a must-visit for train enthusiasts.

Another highlight is the Kyoto Aquarium, located on the park’s northern edge. Opened in 2012, the aquarium features nine zones, including a Dolphin Stadium, a Rivers of Kyoto zone housing Japanese giant salamanders, and a Penguin Zone. The facility focuses on both entertainment and education, aiming to teach visitors about aquatic life and environmental conservation.

The park also includes the Midori-no-kan garden, a tea house, and the Inochi-no-Mori (Living Forest) area, which features small ponds and a biotope that recreates the natural environment prior to urbanization. Additionally, visitors can find old trolley cars repurposed as small museums and souvenir shops, offering a glimpse into Kyoto’s transportation history.

Throughout the year, Umekoji Park hosts various events and festivals, enhancing its vibrant atmosphere. Whether you’re interested in cultural exhibits, family-friendly attractions, or simply seeking a peaceful place to relax, Umekoji Park provides a diverse and enjoyable experience in the...

This park is one of the best public spots in Kyoto! Well-maintained, clean, and super spacious — perfect for running, walking, or just relaxing under the trees. 👍 Facilities are great, and there are also several vending machines around the park which is very convenient after exercise.

⚠️ Just a little tip: be careful when buying drinks from the vending machines right after running. If your money is slightly wet or damp, the machine might swallow your bill without giving you the drink or the money back. I personally experienced this with a 1000 yen bill, and even with help from a kind local, the machine didn’t return my money. This might apply to other vending machines in Japan too, so make sure your bills are dry before use.

☀️ Since it’s summer, the heat can be quite intense, so the park may look less crowded. Best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when it’s cooler and more comfortable.

⭐ Rating: 5/5 ✅ Pros: excellent public facilities, clean, green, peaceful, vending machines available ❌ Cons: very hot in summer, vending machines don’t work well...

Umekoji Park, located in Kyoto, Japan, has a rich history and serves as a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city. Originally established in 1895 as a railway facility, it underwent a transformation in 1996 into the picturesque park it is today. The park's name, "Umekoji," translates to "plum tree lane," reflecting its initial purpose as a place for plum blossoms.

Umekoji Park features a scenic pond, walking paths, and open spaces, providing a serene environment for visitors. The park's centerpiece is the Kyoto Railway Museum, showcasing the country's railway history and technological advancements. It attracts both history enthusiasts and families alike. With its blend of nature and cultural exhibits, Umekoji Park stands as a testament to Kyoto's ability to seamlessly integrate modern amenities with its storied past, offering a peaceful retreat in the midst of a...
