As you come to the end of 仲見世商店街 (Nakamise shōten machi) Nakamise Shopping Street, approaching the 宝蔵門 Hōzōmon [treasure house gate], on the right is a small shrine with a walkway lined with green nobori (banners), 久米平内堂 Kume no Heinai-do. The shrine is dedicated to the 17th Century samurai named Kume no Heinai. Skilled in the martial art of Kemjutsu (swordcraft), he was responsible for many deaths. In later life he retired to the Kongo-in Temple in the precincts of Senso-ji and dedicated himself to Zen Buddhism and praying for the souls he had dispatched from this world. He is worshiped as a patron of marriage. The original temple was destroyed in the bombings of Tokyo in World War II but...

Very popular temple, always busy with visitors and tourists. It gets crowded starting around 9 AM and stays that way through the day. I found evenings the best time to visit because the temple is beautifully lit up and less crowded. During the day the small shops and stalls around the temple are very lively and worth exploring. It was difficult to navigate with a stroller during busy hours since the streets and temple areas are packed. There is also a lot of incense burning, so the air...
