My boyfriend and I stayed at this wonderful ryokan styled hotel. (This is a modern version of traditional ryokan). The entrance is around the building, when we first got there we went to the side entrance where the parking garage is but it is only accessible with the room key. There is a staff who will wipe off the luggage wheels before placing it on the tatami floors. We placed our shoes in the locker everyday. Just think of it as entering someones home, you wouldn't be wearing dirty shoes around right? Please be mindful that staff know limit english so be patient they are doing their best. They are very kind as well! all the amenities were great and the communal bashes were certainly different, worth a try! To save some money you can opt out of housekeeping services and opt of the breakfast. We mostly saw solo travelers, couples and business people. I don't recommend for big families as the rooms are not huge.
Room: We stayed in the room with a double sized bed. All the rooms here are fairly small but cozy. It is a suite style room but no living room. Bedroom is separated from the entrance, the toilet/shower is in a separate room from the sink which is typical in Japanese apartments. I found it convenient. We had 2 medium luggages, on the room floor any bigger and it would have been too cluttered, 2 people is the max capacity in terms on comfort. We didn't stay in the room that much anyways. The housekeepers were amazing as well. We were very messy as we leave in a rush daily, I can't believe they even folded our laundry!
Breakfast: We stayed for a week, HIGHLY recommend adding the breakfast option for a part of your stay, the first 2 days and maybe the last day. It is a traditional Japanese style breakfast, it is AYCE and everything comes in small dishes. Of course there is coffee, tea and juice too. The dishes are more of less the same daily but really great food. The restaurant opens up at 7am from what I remember, the staff will cross check the room number and name. Its a small restaurant so be sure to go early! Also in the evenings they have complimentary half size ramen! Was the best...
Read morePros: very clean. Shoe free-zone inside the hotel and there's a locker for your shoes. House keepers clean your room everyday and provide you with fresh towels. close to Sensoji, so the neighborhood is very pretty and old-timey tatami mats - very nice to experience it all thru out the hotel interior and in my room felt safe as a solo female traveler very nice staff quiet - couldn't hear my neighbors at all and certainly don't hear all the screams from the amusement park right next door free coffee station for everyone every morning (note there's Fuglen coffee shop is a block away and opens at 7am with v good coffee) umbrellas provided to borrow a minute walk to conbini (but that's prob true for most hotels in Tokyo)
Cons: small room (but this is Tokyo so kinda expected it) room faces the alleyway so not a nice view but I did get a discount on the single room and was barely home anyway slower wifi. If you need hotel wifi for work, I would reconsider. (I got really good eSim so it wasn't catastrophic for me)
Considerations: longer walk to the two closest train lines (Ginza and Asakusa lines) so beware of this when you book, esp if this is your first time. 12-15 minutes walk is long when you carry around souvenirs. I knew this going in and was fine with it for the most part. breakfasts not included and is an additional fee per day. I personally liked it. Very simple favor profile, basic fare, very Japanese. But not much variety from day to day. You can get extra servings. I'm glad I got it for convenience's sake but I wish I didn't get it for everyday I was there. If you have small tatts, get waterproof bandaids to cover it up. If you have large ones, you cannot go into the onsen and therefore this might not be the...
Read moreI'm a little perplexed at the number of negative reviews for this hotel since, having read through a bunch before arriving, I was little sceptical and wondering if I'd made the right decision in booking to stay here.
Thankfully, my fears were unfounded, as what I got was a very comfortable, spotless hotel with excellent, friendly staff and a genuinely excellent location. I will caveat that I didn't eat in the hotel, so I can't and wont be speaking for it's quality.
My room was absolutely spotless on arrival and actually surprisingly larger than what I expected, having stayed in other central Tokyo hotels before. I really enjoyed the blend of new and old too, with the Tatami flooring and lower to the ground bed but with the mod cons of modern Japan.
The staff were excellent, greeting my friend and I whenever we'd leave or enter the hotel, and I was pleasantly surprised at how I actually enjoyed having to take my shoes off at the entrance. We were also given prompt and friendly service when my friend asked for more pillows, massively in contrast with some other reviews on here.
The location is amazing. Ueno is amazing. The food is amazing. Literally cannot get better for tourists, and there's 2 subway lines nearby to take you to Akihabara or elsewhere. Just note, that neither of these are JR lines, so you'll need to either buy a ticket or SUICA card to ride them each time.
Over all, I was very, very pleased with my stay here and would happily come back in future. In the words of another reviewer I read who gave it 1 star, I can only imagine people who had bad experiences here were unpleasant tourists...
