Would leave negative stars if I could. This was my worst casual cafe experience in my life thus far.
I felt discriminated and unwelcome. I got kicked out from BOTH indoor and outdoor seating on a cold non-busy Wednesday evening at 8pm. Decided to visit here after dinner for some beer and cocktails drinks after seeing great reviews and word-of-mouth for being foreigner-friendly, but ended up being treated very poorly by the pretentious barista. We asked some basic questions about items on the menu and was approached with a rude attitude.
My group of 7 were rejected at the door from even proceeding into the cafe because there weren't enough seats for us when clearly there were tons of empty seats. It wasn't a communication issue. After we were refused from indoor, we decided to sit at the outdoor bench on the street, then took turns ordering at the counter so we can watch our bags. The SAME BARISTA took the extra effort to kick us out again after we ordered four drinks while others in our party were still reading the menu and deciding what to order. His rude attitude about the one-drink-per-person policy really made us uncomfortable. We were eyed on like thieves. Two people from our party had just finished ordering and it just felt like the barista wanted us to leave. He treated other customers very differently and politely. We got so uncomfortable so we barely finished our drinks and left. Also, the price is not cheap at all, pretty expensive for Asakusa. Not to mention, cocktails were not made correctly. My hot wine was just warmed up cheap wine, not even as good as ones I’ve had elsewhere or...
Read moreThis place is severely overrated. We had been recommended it by a friend but upon arrival we ordered the expensive dishes in Japanese and the staff were unresponsive and rude.
I ordered tea with honey (on the front page of the menu) and they said they couldn’t do that. I said fine, I’ll just have the tea. Then they said they could put the honey on the side, to which I said ok. Then they said they couldn’t give me honey at all, and I should order their special overpriced buckwheat honey lemonade drink (which ended up being undrinkable watery nonsense from a plastic capsule, not made fresh in any way). I resigned and ordered that street water which I could not finish. My friend said the coffee was good, so that’s nice.
The food was mid at best (after a much-too-long wait), the salad was slightly soggy like moss on a dewy Sunday morning, the salmon was not fresh and had a distinct chemical preservative smell to it. I couldn’t keep it down, it was sickening. The worst part is they didn’t even prepare the salmon bread, they make you spread the cream cheese and assemble your own meal like a Subway sandwich shop. The only reedeming food items were the breads, which were quite nice, if a little stale. The cardamom and cinnamon breads had nice and strong flavor but had clearly been sitting out for long enough to congeal.
I was surprised that a place like this is still in business, I can’t imagine a desire to be a repeat customer. The decor was nice but I was wondering why I was there after the...
Read moreThis is a wonderful specialty coffee shop. A little coffee break after visiting the famous Sensoji? Definitely! Coffee is amazing, food is delicious, the vibe is swinging and the service is friendly and heart warming.
Walking through the people visiting this popular tourist area, I see enticing, quaint little shops selling local delicacies and beautiful contraptions having people lined up from all corners of the world. There are locals. There are definitely foreigners like me. And halfway through this exciting mix, I see this shop that showcases the famed Japanese hospitality, the expert baristas pumping out well executed craft coffee drinks and the stylish flare that could have come from Oslo (where their original store is) and Melbourne. I feel a sense of worldly harmony walking through these streets with the captivating scent of osmanthus waffling through the tranquil October air.
The space sports an open, mid-cen inspired atmosphere. Dark wood, lo-fi, very calming, nice design touches. A few small tables, a couple communal tables, plenty of bar seats and outdoor seating.
The coffee is definitely worth seeking out. I had a double cappuccino. It's very balanced with a lively acidity. The handpour coffee is also great. Today I had a Honduras via aeropress. They sell coffee whole beans as well as homebrew products.
Food options are slightly more limited, but are nicely made. Alcohol is...
