The Filipino Market in Kota Kinabalu is a wonderful place to visit. It is divided into sections: handicrafts, fruits, native snacks and fresh seafood. At night, a part of the market becomes a night food market. The people in the food market are actually nice but can be pushy. But no need to fear, just buy what you want. Do not buy what you don't want. The set meals at the night food market are affordable. 35 MYR for 2 people. You get 4 different dishes of shrimp, squid, fish and vegetables and 2 servings of rice. It is really good for its price. If you order fresh seafood to be cooked, then it is very expensive. You will be charged cost of seafood plus service fee. One dish can already cost you 70 MYR. So choose wisely. People are not dishonest, they can help you choose. Ask them how much everything costs before agreeing. The night food market can be smokey. It is muddy when in rains. If you are picky about places, this is not for you. Personally, i like its charm.

😁The Handicraft Market is both exciting and a frustrating place to be in Kota Kinabalu. There are stalls selling food stuff that looks really good. Also, there were stalls selling various dried sea produce (fish, cuttlefish, prawns, sea cucumber, etc) . There was handicrafts too.. its a good place to buy survenirs, some of them are not made in Sabah. Be careful to negotiate for prices, they can be really expensive for tourists. 😔 The stalls selling cooked food or fresh seafood otherwise are such a disappointment. There were 2 place selling fresh seafood - 1 : near the Handicraft Market, and 2: near the Pasar Besar Kota Kinabalu. The vendors at (1) were nicer than (2). The vendors were fighting for customers, it was really unpleasant to see. The seafood was fresh, but mind the cleanliness before you choose to eat.

Basically most of the shops are selling pretty much the same thing. It all comes down to which seller wants to sell the most. We walked by a couple of stalls but no one came to approach us, until one lady stopped us and gave us samples from her stall. We end up buying from her instead. You don't have to ask for discounts as they will give discounts when you ask how much it is. They can pack it in a box for you to hand carry it in the airplane. Ikan Bilis is super cheap for grade A quality. Snacks are cheaper than those in Kundasang. -- And please do not ask for more discounts as they are also trying to earn a living. Don't be Cheap ! Support the Locals ! Just like how you support Starbucks and Mc Donald's.

Filipino market is basically the place to buy souvenirs like pearl, clothing, handmade stuffs and many more. The price is not fixed so the customer must bargain to get their best rate. The price you paid without bargain maybe few times higher then the actual price. We also can find many unique items like natives hunting equipments, decoration items, and many things. The pricing as I mentioned earlier reasonable if we bargained Also we can buy locally made Dried seafood. The price are reasonable and Sabah is famous for seafood. Many China, Korean and eastern countries tourist buying it in bulk quantity to bring back due to cheaper price.

This market was a lot of fun!! Especially being the only foreigner shopping around and checking out the local shops and vendors there. They have a huge selection of fruits, vegetables, pastries, dry goods, and a lot more. Big selection of rices and some funky looking pastas that I've never seen before. The prices are definitely hard to beat. It's much much cheaper than going to any grocery stores in the area. The locals were very friendly and warm, always smiling and organizing their goods that are for sale. Go and check it out! It was a good experience walking through the market and interacting with the locals.
