The Atkinson Clock Tower is the oldest standing structure in Kota Kinabalu. Completed in 1905, known as the Atkinson Memorial Clock Tower it is located at Signal hill overlooking the city harbour. The tower was built in the memory of Francis George Atkinson. He was Jesselton's (earlier name of Kota Kinabalu during the British colonial times) first district officer who died in 1902 of Malaria (also named ‘Borneo Fever’) at the young age of 28. His mother presented a two-faced clock, made by William Potts and Sons in Leeds, England to Jesselton town as a tribute to the memory of her son and it was decided later that a clock tower would be built in his honour. At a height of 15.24 metres the clock tower stood rather elegant from its lookout point on the hill facing towards the township of Jesselton. The tower was illuminated at night and was used as a shipping landmark right up to the 1950s.
