Hello Kotor! 🇲🇪 It’s so good to be back 😍 Last time I visited Kotor was in 2019, when I did a Mediterranean cruise 🚢 This time round I only spend 48 hrs in this beautiful town. One of the best things you can do in Kotor is hike up the 1,350 steps to the Kotor Fortress where you can enjoy these incredible views. Here’s are some useful tips to read before you visit: 🎟️ Visit after 8pm. Between 7am - 8am, you will have to pay €8 to hike up the fortress. If you visit after 8pm, you can go for free. But note that it is forbidden to stay on the Kotor City Walls after 10pm, so make sure you give yourself enough time to get down. 👟Wear good trainers / shoes - some parts of the pathway are slippery and some steps are very worn down. 🥤 Water is a must! Bring water with you. There are no shops once you climb up. The hike can take up to an hour to get to the top, so you’ll want to keep yourself hydrated. ⏰ Give yourself time to climb up. The average time it will take is an hour to climb up, but give yourself up to two hours if you don’t want to rush climbing up. Plus 20/30 minutes to walk down. Visiting Kotor Fortress was an absolute highlight of my trip to Montenegro. This stunning historical landmark offers a perfect blend of breathtaking panoramic views, captivating history, and an unforgettable hiking experience. The fortress is strategically located on a hill overlooking the picturesque town of Kotor and the mesmerizing Bay of Kotor. As you ascend the well-marked trail, the scenery unfolds before your eyes, revealing a stunning tapestry of red-roofed houses, the sparkling blue waters of the bay, and lush mountains surrounding the area. The view from the top is truly awe-inspiring and well worth the effort. What makes Kotor Fortress even more special is its rich historical significance. Dating back to the medieval period, the fortress has witnessed centuries of wars, conquests, and cultural transformations. Exploring its walls, towers, and hidden passages felt like stepping back in time. I was fascinated by the intricate architectural details and the stories engraved within its stones. The hike to the fortress can be moderately challenging, with steep sections and uneven paths, but it adds to the sense of adventure and accomplishment. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as there are limited facilities along the way. I recommend starting early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and crowds. Kotor Fortress is a must-visit attraction for nature enthusiasts, history buffs, and anyone seeking an unforgettable experience in Montenegro. The combination of its natural beauty, intriguing history, and the rewarding hike make it an absolute gem. I highly recommend adding it to your itinerary when visiting Kotor.

Around 1350 steps to the top and stunning views. Reaching a height of 280 meters above sea level (~918 feet), the ancient walls surrounding Kotor have served as an impenetrable shield for centuries. The first walls on St. John's Hill date back to the 9th century when Kotor was under Byzantine rule. Half of the way there is a small church dedicated to Virgin Mary built in the 15th century. There are some souvenirs for sale, water and refreshments. The way to the top is a challenge. There are steps and rocks and I advice anti-slippery shoes. It took me 35 minutes all the way up to the fortress but the weather helped a lot because it was not hot. Once at the top you will be blown away with the views. It is totally worth it. The only down in my opinion is that you pay 8€ to do the trail but you wonder where the money goes. There is no maintenance at all. The fortress could be at least recovered and the track also. Thorough out the path you see garbage because that is almost no garbage bins. Also no toilets so some places smell like a wc. Too bad the money is not used on its maintenance.

Worth a visit! In my opinion, it is best see this fortress fully from bottom to top. Some people choose to sneak in through a hole in the wall near the top, but in my opinion, this doesn’t give you the complete feel of the fortress. Entering is pricey- €15 per person, but gives you the opportunity to start the descent from the bottom and fully climb up on the fortress walls; making the most of the hike with a different view at every elevation, and you can explore the nooks and crannies of the walls, a staircase here, a new path there. You are rewarded with a small church maybe halfway up, and the castle is at the top. I wouldn’t change a thing about our version of the hike! We paid the entrance, explored climbed all the way up to the top, and then went back, snuck out through the hole, walked around the hills, went to the cheese shop and got to the viewpoint of the bay of Kotor. The castle could use some historical markers or information. Just do it!

Muazzam bir yer kesinlikle tavsiye ederim. 2 çıkış var 1. Old town kısmından kişi başı 15 euro (2024) çok fazla.
