Escape Rooms Takapuna — Attraction in Devonport-Takapuna

Not terrible, but of all the rooms we've done (we've done a LOT) it was our least favourite place. The mechanics weren't great, one lock was really hard to open so you didn't know you had the right combo, we got told we mustn't have lined it up properly so that was our fault. One of the props was broken which prevented us from completing that puzzle, we were told oh yeah that's intentional cause if it does this thing accidentally then we have to come set it up again for you to gain access again, so you have to move the broken bit (in the dark where you couldnt see what was going on). The sensors were either low quality or poorly maintained as they didn't activate properly. Things were poorly marked. Overall the mechanics weren't very good. Aside from that, there was no story. We were put in the room, given a 3 sentence starter story then after that there was nothing. Nothing about who we were, why we were there, why we were solving puzzles, how the puzzles related to eachother or how they related to us making progress to getting out of the room. There just wasn't anything to immerse yourself in, it was like a bunch of unconnected puzzles with no reason for doing them. Rather disappointing experience. Started with being blindfolded then lead into a room which would be a good idea to get you in the mindset for the room but it was not worth that extra detail for something so bland. We did the wizard room and won't be going back for the others. We have gone to many many other escape rooms and all of them have a story and puzzles that Link together but this room had neither. Yes it was Knockoff Harry potter themed but the tiny blurb on the website is apparently the story and that's it. You get not more information and then are stuck in a room to find random puzzles which do not link together and you get information for puzzles that you can't even get access too without doing three other puzzles that don't link into anything. It's just an awkward situation that leaves you confused and wishing you had your money back in your pocket. 88 dollars for two people to be disappointed is a lot of money in this bloody economy. Wizarding room Pros- Some of the puzzles were nicely done Enjoyed the theme 90 minute duration

Cons- Room was a bit lacklustre- some decorations fallen off wall, scrapes on wall, some props felt slightly cheap etc just kind of had a low budget feel. Some of the puzzles are really difficult which isn't necessarily a bad thing but because there is really not much going on in the room we were left kind of listless when we got stuck on something until we got a clue or figured it out. I have done a few escape rooms in the past and haven’t really gotten that from most.

Final verdict would be that we wouldn't return sadly…

Side note- we didn’t book initially because we weren’t sure if we were going to do the 6 or 8 pm room. We tried to walk in at 6 having checked there was space online, but the door was locked and no buzzer. We phoned the number and were told there was no space and to book for 8. This wasn’t the end of the world we just entertained ourselves for that time but just an fyi for others- doesn’t seem like you...
