Frank Kitts Play Area isn't just a playground; it's a Wellington institution. For decades, this spot on the waterfront has been a source of joy for families, and on any sunny weekend, you'll find it buzzing with the happy chaos of children at play. It's truly iconic, a cornerstone of Wellington's waterfront charm, and it’s easy to understand why. Originally known as Marine Park, the playground was renamed in 1979 in honour of Sir Francis Kitts, a former mayor who clearly left his mark on the city. For many Wellingtonians, Frank Kitts holds a special place in their hearts, filled with memories of their own childhoods or time spent with their families. Its prominent location, adjacent to the spacious Frank Kitts Park, ensures a constant stream of visitors – locals and tourists alike – passing through its vibrant space. In fact, its popularity was even formally recognized in 1992 with a "Best Public Project" award from the New Zealand Landscape Guild. However, time and safety concerns led to a critical conversation about the playground’s future. Some incidents involving young children falling from the slide sparked debate about a potential revamp or removal. Thankfully, the strong public support for preserving this iconic space ensured its upgrade. The council unanimously approved a revitalisation project that commenced in late 2021, and after much anticipation, the revamped park reopened in early March 2023. The redesign masterfully balanced the desire for modernization with the need to retain the park's much-loved character. The iconic lighthouse, a long-time favourite feature, was preserved but now boasts a safer slide attachment, keeping the spirit of the original design while addressing past safety concerns. The upgraded playground boasts a range of new features too – shaded and non-shaded seating areas for parents to relax, swings, and an interactive waka to ignite the imagination. New soft rubber grounds and caging reinforcements further enhance safety. The overall theme now leans more heavily into an oceanic feel, which suits the waterfront location perfectly. The improvements were carefully considered, retaining what made the park special whilst making it safer and more inclusive. This cost-effective approach is a testament to the value placed on community spaces in Wellington. While some may lament the small changes made to downscale certain features, the improved safety and functionality are undoubtedly a positive shift. Frank Kitts Play Area is more than just a playground. It's a vibrant, noisy, and much-loved space that embodies the spirit of Wellington. It’s a testament to the power of community and the enduring value of play. If you're in Wellington with kids, or just want a dose of joyful energy, a visit to the revamped Frank Kitts Play Area is an absolute must.

Great to see this area shiny and new again. Was looking quite tired before they closed it a few years ago. The waterfront is complete again now that it has returned. Fun for both children, and adults after dark on a night out, as it is beautifully lit up at night, including the inside of the lighthouse, which is way cooler than it was when I was a kid. Some things are missing due to the reduced budget but it doesn't take away from the magic...
